The design of the monster in the next horror film from Universal Pictures The Wolf Man it’s very different from anything we’ve seen before in a werewolf movie.
Fans appear to be torn over the design, which was initially revealed at Halloween Horror Nights. director Leigh Whannell talked about that version of the monster, calling it the Spirit Halloween version of the Wolf Man design that was created.
During an interview with Screen Rant, the director shared that the unique design of the werewolf creature was inspired By Heath Ledger Joker.
He explained: “It was tough. It was strange, because it was exactly like you said, there have been so many versions of this. I lined up all the different versions, I had a PDF of them all Lon Chaney TO David Norton In The American Werewolf, The Howling, The Dog Soldiers.
“I had every look in front of me, and I kind of stared at it, and I was like, ‘Okay, so where do I fit in?’ You know what a great inspiration Heath Ledger’s version of the Joker was for me.
“Not so much in terms of looks, but I had a picture of him on my desk as the Joker because I love what they did there with the character.
“They stayed true to what the Joker is, but they just took it [to another level]. You had never seen that version of the Joker before. Not at that moment. People still love it.
“Remember when they first posted that picture of his face with that paper? In 2008 social media wasn’t as crazy as it is now, but I remember Twitter blowing up. It was like, ‘Is that the Joker?’
“I found it really inspiring what they did with that character and how they approached it. And I was thinking [about] if I can follow their approach to the Wolfman, and I think I have.
“So that document that I had with all the different photos of all the different Wolfmen, when I put up my version of it, it didn’t look like any of them. And I was like, ‘Ooh.’”
The design of the Wolfman in the film was created by the make-up artist Arjen Tuitenand so far the monster has only been briefly mentioned in the film. We have yet to see it properly.
Speaking about seeing the design for the first time, Whannell said: “And I was staring at it for the first time and thought, ‘That’s it. It just seemed perfect.” You know what? I never had any notes. I thought, “This is what we should do.”
“It’s not like that [happen often]. Usually in Los Angeles, in Hollywood, it’s like, ‘Can we change this?’ Heck, every script I’ve written has been absolutely inundated with notes. But when I saw the maquette, the model made by Arian, I thought: “There are no notes I can give you that [improve this]’ – I just thought, ‘Just do it.’”
Christopher Abbott (Poor things, it arrives at night) plays Blake, a husband and father from San Francisco, “who inherits his remote childhood home in rural Oregon after his father disappears and is presumed dead.
“With his marriage to his powerful wife, Charlotte (Giulia Garner; Ozark, Inventing Anna), worn out, Blake convinces Charlotte to take a break from the city and visit the property with their young daughter, Ginger (Matlida Firth; Hullraisers, Coma).
“But as the family approaches the farm in the dead of night, they are attacked by an unseen animal and, in a desperate escape, they barricade themselves inside the house as the creature prowls the perimeter.
“As the night wears on, however, Blake begins to act strangely, transforming into something unrecognizable, and Charlotte will be forced to decide whether the terror inside their home is deadlier than the danger outside.”
The film comes from The invisible man director Leigh Whannell and a screenplay written by Whannell and Corbett Tuck as well as Lauren Schuker Blum AND Rebecca Angelothe latter duo had already written the dramatic comedy, Stupid money.
The film is scheduled for release in January 2025.
