Denis Villenueve will make DUNE: MESSIAH sooner than expected and shares the first details on the plot

He looks like the director Denis Villeneuve will do Duna: Messiah sooner than he initially expected. He had already said it afterwards Duna: second parthe wanted to take a break from the franchise and do something else, but it doesn’t look like that will be the case.

The director recently told Deadline: “Let’s say I thought that after part two I’m going to take a break, that I’m going to go back to the woods and stay in the woods for a while to recover.

“But the forest wasn’t really for me and I got back behind the camera quicker than I thought. But that’s all I can say.”

The director then shared some plot details saying that the theme of war will be at the center of the adaptation, adding Duna: second part“to save his friends, [Paul Atredies] a war must start.”

He confirmed it too Timothée Chalamet, Zendaya, Florence PughAND Anya Taylor-Gioia they would all return to the sequel. Taylor-Joy’s Alia Atreides was introduced very briefly in Dune 2.

Villenueve said: “They have to come back. I’m with the main cast when it happens, and with other creeps. What can I say?”

Frank Herbert’s Duna: Messiah is set 12 years after the events of the first book and follows Paul Atreides, now Emperor of the Known Universe. Paul’s rule is marked by political intrigue, religious fervor, and the consequences of his prescient visions.

As he navigates the complexities of his position, Paul faces challenges from various factions, including the powerful Bene Gesserit Sisterhood, who seek to control his bloodline.

Amidst all this turmoil, Paul’s relationship with his wife Chani and his young children adds a personal dimension to his difficulties.

The director had previously drawn comparisons to Paul Atreides and The Godfather‘s Michael Corleone, and spoke about his relationship with Chani, saying, “He cheated on her in many ways.”

“But the most important thing for Chani is that it’s not about love. It’s about him becoming the figure that will keep the Fremen in their mental prison.”

He explained: “A leader who is not there to liberate the Fremen, but to control them. This is the tragedy of all tragedies. Like the Michael Corleone of science fiction, he becomes what he wanted to avoid. And he will try to find a way to save his soul in the third part.”

Villeneuve also spoke about Chani’s feelings towards Paul, saying: “That anger is tremendous. I don’t want to reveal what I’m going to do with the third film.”

He continued teasing: “I know exactly what to do. I’m writing this right now. But there’s a lot of firepower there and I’m very excited about this decision.”

The director also spoke about how the third film will be different from the first two, saying: “First of all it’s important that people understand that for me it was really a diptych.

“It was really a couple of films that will be the adaptation of the first book. This is done and finished. If I do a third one, which is being written, it won’t be like a trilogy. It’s strange to say it, but if I go back there it’s to do something that seems different and has its own identity.”

He continued: “Listen, if Duna: Messiah It happens, many years will have passed for me on Arrakis and I would like to do something else. I think it would be a good idea for me to make sure that, in Messiahthere are seeds in the project if someone wants to do something else later, because they are beautiful books.

“They are harder to adapt. They become more and more esoteric. It’s a little harder to adjust to, but I won’t close the door. I won’t do it alone, but it might happen with someone else.
