A24 is producing a series adaptation of Stephen Kingit is the dark fantasy novel Fairy tale. Paul Greengrass (Bourne identity movies, United 93, Captain Phillips), who wrote the screenplay for a feature film not yet made, is still attached to the project. This time the story will be told over the course of ten episodes.
The script that Greengrass wrote for the film will be expanded by the director together with JH Wyman (Fringe, Almost Human and Debris), who will also serve as showrunner.
The story centers on a seventeen-year-old boy who inherits the keys to a parallel world where good and evil are at war and the stakes couldn’t be higher, neither for that world nor for ours.
“Charlie Reade seems like a normal high schooler, good at baseball and football, a decent student. But it carries a heavy load. His mother was killed in a terrible accident when he was seven, and the pain drove his father to drink.
“Charlie has learned to take care of himself and his father. When Charlie is seventeen, he meets a dog named Radar and his elderly master, Howard Bowditch, a recluse in a large house at the top of a large hill, with a locked shed in the back yard. Sometimes strange sounds come out of it.
“Charlie begins working for Mr. Bowditch and falls in love with Radar. Then, when Bowditch dies, he leaves Charlie a tape that tells a story no one would believe. What Bowditch knows, and has kept secret his entire long life, is that inside the shed is a portal to another world.
This is a great story of good versus evil and will make a great series if the creative team adapts the source material properly.
King wrote the book at the beginning of the pandemic after asking himself, “What could you write that would make you happy?”
He said: As if my imagination was waiting for the question to be asked, I saw a vast deserted city, deserted but alive. I saw empty streets, haunted buildings, a gargoyle head lying upside down in the street.
“I saw smashed statues (I didn’t know what, but I eventually found out). I saw a huge, sprawling palace with glass towers so tall their tips pierced the clouds. Those images liberated the story I wanted to tell.”
Pietro Riso will executive produce alongside Greengrass, Wyman and King. Greengrass will likely be involved as a director.
I can’t wait to see how this show turns out!
