Andrew Garfield thought he was too old to play SPIDER-MAN, but explains why he got the role

Andrea Garfield played the title web-crawler in 2012 The Extraordinary Spider-Man and its 2014 sequel. Many were disappointed when Spidey was rebooted so quickly for the MCU, because it sort of sent Garfield out without giving Peter Parker closure in the highly anticipated third film.

Luckily, he’s back for Spider-Man: No Way Home in 2021 and we got to see him suited up once again. Rumors say the MCU could use it at least one more time, which Garfield says he’s ready for, but time will tell on that front.

Apparently, the actor was pretty sure he wouldn’t even get cast when he auditioned for his first Spider-Man movie. As explained above Happy Sad Confused podcast, recalled feeling “too old” to play Peter Parker/Spider-Man when he auditioned for the role.

Garfield credited his acting teacher Greta Seacat for helping him capture Spider-Man, as her advice before his audition made him treat it like “it doesn’t fucking matter”. He explained:

“I did the first audition and thought that was enough. I’m too old. I felt like I had been told too much. Overall I was 25 or 26 and playing a high schooler. I know I have good genes and all, but I don’t know. This isn’t going right.

“I was surprised to have the opportunity to audition. Greta gave me an acting edit: You need to treat this audition like you’re making a short film with all your high school friends. This allowed me to go fuck myself.

“Keep the channel open. Be free. This doesn’t matter. Treat it like it doesn’t matter. This is the time when whatever talent you have can just be there. You’re a child again. You are emotionally available and you are not tense and you try to do it well. I remember that feeling of ‘I don’t give a fuck.'”

Garfield came out of the audition feeling “really good” thanks to that fundamental change in mindset, and the rest is history. Garfield told Esquire earlier this month of his return to the franchise:

“For sure, I would 100% come back if it was the right thing, if it added value to the culture, if there was a great concept or something that hasn’t been done before, that’s unique and weird and exciting and can sink your mind. ideas.” teeth inside. I love that character and he brings joy. If part of what I bring is joy, then I’m happy in return.”
