I love good, fun family horror films, and… The summer of monsters it’s a blast! This film takes audiences on a fun and emotional journey, perfect for the whole family.
If you are a fan of movies like House of Monsters, The ‘BurbsOR The observer in the woodsyou will definitely have fun with this.
The summer of monsters it blends a nostalgic sense of childhood adventure with just the right amount of supernatural thrills, making it a standout of its genre.
The story centers on a group of kids, led by Noah, who see their summer vacation take a dark turn when a mysterious force begins to disrupt their idyllic island fun.
They team up with a retired police detective, played by Mel Gibson, to embark on a monster adventure to save their home. Their mission? To prevent a witch from feasting on the souls of children.
While there are some dark moments in the film where the story takes disturbing turns, it’s all balanced out by a heartfelt journey that brings both laughs and warm, sentimental moments.
One of the film’s greatest strengths is its ability to deliver a solid, compelling story while introducing us to a group of incredibly likable characters. You can’t help but root for Noah and his gang as they are part of their journey.
The film is full of nostalgic vibes, especially in the way it captures the essence of childhood summers… the freedom, the mischief and the feeling that anything is possible. But, of course, in this case, everything comes with a supernatural twist that keeps things fresh and exciting.
I was particularly impressed with the direction of David Henrie (Wizards of Waverly Place). He clearly has a love for classic fiction and you can feel the influence of fairy tales and old school monster movies throughout.
Henrie spoke about the film’s themes, saying: “Historically, fairy tales used monsters to personify our deepest fears, giving young people the chance to overcome them. Now more than ever, we need narratives that inspire courage in the face of darkness.”
This is exactly what it is The summer of monsters achieves: it’s a return to the kind of storytelling that is both powerful and magical.
Unfortunately, The summer of monsters it only has a limited theatrical release right now, which is a shame because it’s one of the best films in theaters right now. If you can see it on the big screen, I highly recommend it. It’s a perfect film for families who love a bit of creepiness.
But if you miss it, keep an eye out for it when it hits VOD. This is a film not to be overlooked.
It’s also in the cast Mason Thames (The black phone), Lorena Bracco (Those good guys, The Sopranos), Nora Zehetner (The right things), Noah Cottrell (The Spiderwick Chronicles), Abby James Witherspoon (Secret headquarters), Lilah Pate (External banks), Giuliano Lerner (The Wonder Years), AND Patrick Renna (The Sandlot).
The summer of monsters is a fun, heartfelt, and disturbing family adventure that hits all the right notes. It’s a film that taps into the magic and nostalgia of childhood, while delivering enough supernatural thrills to keep you on the edge of your seat. Don’t miss this, it’s a monstrously beautiful moment!
