Bill Lawrence Provides Update on SCRUBS Reboot; TED LASSO Season 4; and his comedy Steve Carell College

Television writer, producer and showrunner Bill Lawrence he is best known for creating the series Rotation city, Scrub, The city of pumas, Ted Lassoand his two current shows, Shrinking AND Bad monkey. He’s pretty busy making new seasons of shows he has in the works, including one starring him Steve Carellbut it also has its hands in some exciting possible reboots.

He sat down with Deadline to give updates on everything he’s working on, and the first was the return of the fan-favorite medical comedy, Scrub.

He told the outlet he figures Scrub 2.0 as a hybrid between a revival, revisiting the original characters a decade and a half after the end of the original series, and a reboot, revamping the concept with new characters.

“We talked a lot and I think the only real reason to do it is a combo. A: People who want to see what the medical world was like for the people they love, which is part of every successful reboot. But B: I think the show has always worked because you can see young people being thrown into the world of medicine, knowing that the young people who go there are super idealistic and do it because it’s a calling. The cliché “rich doctors who play golf” no longer exists: it is no longer like that. So I think, whatever it is, it would be a gigantic mistake not to do a combination of those two things.

All of the original cast members have said they would be happy to return. This includes the star Zach Braff (JD), who recently reunited with Lawrence for a guest stint Bad monkeybased on By Carl Hiaasen novel, as a doctor whose involvement in a medical fraud scheme has tragic consequences.

Next up is the beloved series Ted Lassowhich concluded its three-season run with fans clamoring for more. In August it was reported that Apple TV+ and Warner Bros TV had taken a major step towards the fourth season of the series. picking up options on several key members of the UK cast.

There has been little information beyond that, and Lawrence has made it clear that there is only one person who is expected to provide it.

“Jason Sudeikis, he’s the voice, the heart, the driving factor behind the show, not just on a professional level, but on a personal level, he’s the guy whose life gets turned upside down and who would make the biggest sacrifices. The only safe bet in Hollywood is that no one is involved Ted Lasso We’ll never, ever talk about it until Jason decides who he wants to talk to and what he wants to say.

So we will continue to wait and keep our fingers crossed for a fourth season.

Finally, Lawrence talked a little about his upcoming HBO college comedy starring Carell, which he is co-creating with frequent collaborator and Bad monkey EP Matt Tarses. The show is still untitled and all we know is that it is “a comedy revolving around an author’s intricate bond with his daughter, set against the backdrop of a college campus.” Lawrence said of the show and working with Carell:

“Steve Carell is a really inspiring comedian for me. For what I do, someone has to be able to be funny and goofy and silly and then turn on a dime, and he did it in The Office. He was a ridiculous character who still cheered me up at times by the end. I’m super excited and definitely feel both pressure and opportunity at HBO, because for writers like me it’s always been the go-to channel. And I’m well aware of it The one with the curb gone and Barry’he’s gone, their wheelhouse comedies are no longer around.

The writers’ session on the series will begin this week, with filming likely to begin early next year.

And in another connection to the Bill Lawrence universe, Carell’s character “is loosely based on our heads.” Bad monkey author Carl Hiaasen said of himself and co-creator Tarses. “Carl is an everyman, an author, a man of the people, very self-effacing and very humble, and Steve plays a very similar character who stumbles into academia,” he said.

Lawrence definitely has his hands full, but only with the best content. I can’t wait Scrubs, Ted Lassoand this new series to move forward, and I can’t wait for the second season of Shrinkingwhich will begin with its first two episodes on Apple TV+ next Wednesday, October 16th.
