DC Comics artist Kevin Maguire recently talked about his time on the set of James Gunnit is imminent Supermanthe first upcoming film set in DC’s Gods and Monsters: Part 1.
While speaking with Comic Frontier, Magrire talked about how he saw Gunn film a scene set in the Fortress of Solitude and also what he expects to see from Gunn as he makes this film and builds the DCU.
The artist said: “Myself and a bunch of other writers and artists were invited onto the set of Superman for a day in May. They showed us everything. They showed us the pre-production stuff. They showed us some footage.
“I was able to walk around the Fortress of Solitude set and watch them film a scene. There’s definitely some sort of JLI influence there.”
He added: “And it wouldn’t surprise me, given that, you know, Guardians of the Galaxy AND Suicide squadthat if James Gunn’s universe were to put together a Justice League, it probably wouldn’t be Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman, Green Lantern, Flash. It would probably be like the strange and unusual characters. Like, I don’t think it would be like our initial lineup.
“I’m sure we’ll throw in, I don’t know, any wacky characters. He likes wacky characters. So that’s us. So that’s great. I’m happy he’s in charge. It’s a shame Keith isn’t. I’m not here to see it. But It’s great to see his work live.”
Maguire is probably right that Gunn will bring a very different and unique spin to the Justice League team. This is evident from a team that appears to include Guy Gardner, Mister Terrific, Metamorpho, and Hawkgirl so far. We also know that Maxwell Lord is funding the group, so it appears to be a “corporate” league before Superman assembles his own team.
Superman will tell the story of “Superman’s journey to reconcile his Kryptonian heritage with his human upbringing as Clark Kent of Smallville, Kansas. He is the embodiment of truth, justice and the American way, guided by human kindness in a world that sees kindness as old-fashioned.”
Superman even stars David Corenswet as Clark Kent/Superman, Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane; Nicola Hoult as Lex Luthor; Nathan Fillion as Green Lantern; Isabela Mercede as Hawkgirl; Edi Gathegi as Michael Holt/Mr. Terrific; Skyler Gisondo as Jimmy Olsen; María Gabriela de Faría in the role of Angela Spica, aka The Engineer; Sara Sampaioas Eva Teschmacher; AND Terence Rosemore as Otis.
Superman The theatrical release is scheduled for July 11, 2025.
