Eureka Video has released a trailer for the restored Blu-ray version of the 1982 classic Don Bluth-direct film The secret of the NIMH.

The film is based on By Robert C. O’Brien popular children’s book, Mrs. Frisby and the NIMH ratsand Bluth made the film shortly after leaving Walt Disney Productions in 1979 to launch his own company, Don Bluth Productions. The secret of the NIMH it was the company’s first feature film.

I love this movie. It’s a really well-made animated film, the story of which follows a field mouse named Mrs Brisby who must seek the help of a colony of mice to save her sick son.

He discovers that he has a deeper bond with this colony of rats than he suspected. The film is described as “a sweeping fantasy epic crafted with astonishingly beautiful cel animation.”

The widowed Mrs Brisby (Elizabeth Hartmann), a field mouse, lives with his children in a concrete block on Fitzgibbon’s rural farm, though not for long. As harvest season approaches, he must move his family before their home is destroyed by the farmer’s plow.

But his son, Timothy (Ina Fried), has fallen ill and cannot be moved. In desperate need of help, Mrs. Brisby visits the Great Owl (Giovanni Carradine), who in turn presents her to Nicodemus (Derek Jacobi): the wise leader of a colony of rats who lives under a rose bush on the Fitzgibbon Estate.

The rats are technologically advanced and possess vast intelligence thanks to their connection to a mysterious place they call NIMH, and they agree to help Mrs. Brisby because of a dear friendship with her late husband.

But not all mice are so kind, and the power-hungry Jenner (Paolo Shenar) has a vested interest in making sure Mrs. Brisby and her mouse family stay here…

Eureka Video will release this restored version of the film on Blu-ray in December 2024 as part of “The Masters of Cinema” series, in a limited edition of 2000 copies featuring exclusively an O-card box set.
