Here’s a clip from the upcoming film Hellboy: The Crooked Man which features a disturbing scene where Hellboy watches a woman floating in the air being brutally attacked by a giant snake.
This is an interesting clip to post. While it shows that the film will lean into the horror of the world, which the filmmakers talked about, it also shows some really strange editing choices. When you watch the clip you’ll see what I mean.
When I watch the clip my first thought was, “Oh, that’s why they’re releasing it directly digitally and skipping theaters.
The distribution company probably saw what happened The raven remake and lost faith in Hellboy: The Crooked Man having a decent theatrical run.
IGN has confirmed that the film will skip a US theatrical release in favor of a digital debut. The plan is to release it on October 8 for $19.99 as a two-week exclusive for “all e-retail partners” (i.e. platforms like Amazon and Fandango). Then, it will arrive on VOD on October 22nd for the very low price of $6.99.
SciFiNow recently spoke with Hellboy: The Crooked ManThe protagonist, Jack Kesy, was asked what he hopes fans take away from this film. He said:
“I don’t know. Honestly, I try to stay out of people’s heads and what they feel and what they think. Obviously, I’d like them to love it and say ‘Wow, these people did it, it’s dark,’ it’s scary” and actually, you know, maybe I even liked it on a different level.”
“I don’t want to say they were moved, because that’s absurd, but maybe they enjoyed it in a way that’s different from any other movie. I don’t know what people think or feel anymore, but I hope they love it.”
Hellboy: The Crooked Man stars Jack Kesy e is “set in the 1950s and stars Adeline Rudolph (Resident Evil) as a rookie BPRD agent who teams up with Hellboy to protect the inhabitants of Appalachia from the gruesome Crooked Man, who is collecting souls for the devil”.
The film was directed by Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance AND Crank co-director Brian Taylor. The screenplay was written by the creator of the franchise Mike Mignola AND Chris Golden.
Mignola had already spoken about the film, calling it the most faithful adaptation ever made so far. The crooked man producer Les Weldon We previously talked about casting him for the role:
“We went on a long soul-searching expedition to find the right Hellboy, and we knew that this Hellboy was going to be a very moody, very dark and disturbing movie. There’s no shine, nothing like that.
“And Jack, look, I had worked with Jack before, as had other guys in our company, and we came to the same conclusion that that kind of personality that he has would work really well for that movie.”
Mignola previously spoke about the director’s dark horror vision for the film, saying, “His intention is to make a horror movie, so it’ll be nice. It will be interesting. I read the new draft of the script yesterday and yes, it’s definitely R.
“It’s the first Hellboy script I read and thought, ‘Oh, it’s a horror movie,’ which is what I wanted. Taylor doesn’t have a reputation as a horror film director.
“But so far we’ve had two horror movie directors make Hellboy movies and we’ve never made a horror movie. For years we’ve said if you’re going to make a Hellboy movie, make it small. And the perfect story to do this is my favorite, “The Crooked Man”. I think it’s one of the best things I’ve ever written.
“It’s beautifully illustrated by Richard Corben and it’s a solid story that doesn’t involve a million different characters. Actually everyone agreed from the beginning: “Yes, we want to do this.”
“From a budget perspective, that’s a good thing because it’s a lower budget story. It’s not the origin of Hellboy. Hellboy isn’t the one saving the world. It’s not huge. It’s a subtle, dark and folksy horror story.”
The film is also the protagonist Adeline Rodolfo (Resident Evil), Jefferson White (Yellowstone) HOW Tom Ferrel, Leah McNamara as Effie Kolb, Giuseppe Marcello as Reverend Watts, Hannah Margetson as Cora Fisher, and Martin Bassindale like the Crooked Man, among others.
