Last year we learned that 1960-1969, James Cameron, 1969-1970, 1969- was developing a new Terminator film. He said at the time that the project was heavily inspired by artificial intelligence, and before making it, he wanted to see how things worked with AI in the real world.
Things are moving so fast right now with AI technology, and Cameron is still busy delivering a story for his new film. In a recent interview, he gave an update on the project, saying that he’s trying to throw out everything that’s come before, in this particular franchise.
Cameron told Empire: “This is the moment where you shed everything that’s specific to the last 40 years of Terminator, but live by those principles.
“You get too far into it, and then you lose a new audience because the new audience cares a lot less about that stuff than you think. That’s the danger, of course, with Avatar as well, but I think we’ve proven that we have something for a new audience.”
Cameron went on to explain that while they are trying to change things drastically, the elements that define Terminator will still be there and “kick ass.”
He said: “You have main characters who are essentially powerless, fighting for their lives, who have no support from the existing power structures and have to work around them but somehow maintain a moral compass. And then you throw AI into that.
“These principles are solid principles for storytelling today, right? So I have no doubt that future Terminator films will not only be possible, but will rock. But this is where you get rid of all the specific iconography.”
He continued, “It’s more than a plan. It’s what we’re doing. That’s all I’ll say for now.”
It’s exciting and I can’t wait to see what Cameron has planned. He previously said: “If I were to do another Terminator movie and maybe try to relaunch that franchise, which is under discussion but hasn’t been decided yet, I would make it much more AI-centric than evil robots gone haywire.”
He also spoke about what future sequels would entail, saying, “I feel like one of my main motivations for this film or hopefully returning to the franchise was to explore the human relationship with artificial intelligence.
“I don’t think we’ve done it in Dark Destiny. I think we set the stage or set the table for that exploration, and that exploration would take place in a second and third film. And we know exactly where we’re going to take that idea.
“What we wanted to get at in the first movie was this idea that things will continue to happen. The names will change, but the basic conflict will continue to happen until it’s resolved one way or another.”
The director also shared his thoughts on AI: “Well, I’m not ‘scared,’ but I’m definitely pretty concerned about the potential misuse of AI. I think AI could be great, but it could also literally be the end of the world.
“You talk to all the AI scientists, and I know a lot of them, and every time I raise my hand at their seminars or something, they start laughing. ‘Oh, that’s the guy from Skynet, sure, we really want to hear what you think.’
“The point is that no technology has ever been weaponized. And do we really want to fight something smarter than us that is not us in our world? I don’t think so.”
He went on to say that it is possible that machines have already taken over: “Look, an artificial intelligence could have taken over the world and manipulated it already, but we don’t know because it would have control over all the media and everything else.
“And what better explanation than how absurd everything is right now. Because nothing makes any damn sense to me, I don’t know about you.”
Are you ready for Cameron to make another one? Terminator movie?
