The new adaptation of Stephen KingThe terrifying vampire novel Salem’s Lot It will finally come out after a two-year wait. It won’t be released in theaters, which is a shame, but it will come to Max.
According to the director by Gary Dauberman, Salem’s Lot perhaps it would never have been released without King’s support!
During an interview with Total Film, the director said, “I’m extremely grateful for Steve’s support.” When asked what exactly King did to help, the director simply added, “Let’s just say he provided shock support for some of the bumpier parts of this journey and that’s it.”
I saw a trailer for this movie two years ago at CinemaCon, and I was really impressed with what I saw! It looked like a great, scary vampire movie!
King said he was impressed with the film, saying, “Between you and me, Twitter, I’ve seen the new SALEM’S LOT and it’s pretty good. Old school horror film: slow build, big payoff.
“I don’t know why WB is holding it back; not that it’s embarrassing or anything. Who knows. I just write the f–king stuff.”
King also spoke about the film several months ago, saying, “It feels like a horror version of slow-burn movies like THE GREAT ESCAPE. It builds up really well.
“There are some deviations from the book that I disagree with, but overall, faithful. Best scene: Danny Glick in the hospital, trying to rip open a blood bag. Glick’s scene could have been directed by John Carpenter in his prime.”
When asked if he saw his film as a response to romantic, pre-teen-friendly bloodsuckers, Dauberman said, “It wasn’t about claiming anything. It’s always nice to see different takes on vampires. That said, I hadn’t seen a more traditional vampire movie in a long time, so I thought maybe I should make one.”
Lewis Pullman (Bad Times at the El Royale, Top Gun: The Legend Continues) stars in Salem’s Lot and will play the role of author Ben Mears, “a man who returns to his childhood home, Jerusalem’s Lot, seeking inspiration for his next book, only to discover his hometown is gripped by a vampire, prompting him to join a diverse group to fight the evil presence.”
Speaking previously about the film, Pullman said: “It’s a scary thing to do these remakes, man. It’s like, this and [Top Gun: Maverick]There’s so much pressure that it’s hard to figure out a trick to make it work.
“But Gary Dauberman, the director, is really keen to do the book justice. But even the previous adaptation was in two parts, because it’s such a big book and there are so many moving parts and so many characters.
“So there are some parts where Gary had to push and find what was really at the heart of the movie to keep, but for the most part, he’s really faithful to the book and keeps a lot of the original dialogue. He’s a Stephen King sleuth, so he doesn’t want to hurt Stephen.”
He added: “So I think it’s in good hands, Gary is a really smart guy who has a keen eye for things. I think it’s not just about the jump scares, but the more conceptual and visual things that, rather than a shock that fades from your body in the next five minutes, something more visual, like a fingerprint that’s burned into your retinas like a haunting image that will wake you up in the middle of the night and you can’t get it out of your head.”
The film will be released on Max in October 2024.
