Director Mike Flanagan (Doctor Sleep, The Haunting of Hill House) is currently developing a new The Exorcist film for Blumhouse, and he has big ambitions for it. In fact, he sees the opportunity as a goal to make the scariest movie he’s ever made.
When the project was first announced, it was said to be a “radical new take on the franchise,” and now it’s teasing its vision for the franchise’s future.
Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter, Flanagan said, “We’re not making it easy for ourselves. But I’ve always felt like there’s no point in going into a franchise or a property that’s so monolithic if there’s not something new you can bring to it. I pursued The Exorcist very aggressively because I felt like I had something I could bring to it.”
He continued: “This is an opportunity to do something that I think has never been done within the franchise, something that honors what came before but doesn’t rely on nostalgia.
“I just saw an opportunity to make the scariest movie I’ve ever made. I know the expectations are high. No one is more intimidated than me.”
Well, damn! I hope he actually pulls it off! I’d love nothing more than for him to make a scary movie. Exorcist horror movies! I have to say if anyone can do it, it’s Flanagan. That guy is a very talented director and storyteller, especially with horror movies.
Flanagan previously said in a statement: “The Exorcist It’s one of the reasons I became a filmmaker, and it’s an honor to have the chance to try something fresh, bold, and terrifying in its universe. Reuniting with my friends at Blumhouse, who have made some of my favorite works with me, makes it even more exciting.”
Head of Blumhouse Jason Blum added: “Mike’s voice and vision are indispensable to horror fans and we are thrilled to welcome him back to Blumhouse. I responded immediately to Mike’s fresh take on the world of The Exorcist and can’t wait for audiences to experience it.”
David Gordon Green a trilogy was originally planned for The Exorcistbut after the first film was a total flop, it was clear that the franchise needed a new direction. I can’t wait to see what Flanagan has planned!
