James Gunn he’s busy with a lot of different projects right now, as he shakes up the DC Universe and takes it in a (hopefully) more exciting and successful direction.
We know he’s working on Supermanthe first film of the new DC era, which fans are super excited about, but it is actually the second project to arrive in its DC universe. The first will be this year’s new adult animated series, Commando Creaturesand Gunn has released the first information on the project for us to verify.
Gunn interviewed Entertainment Weekly to explain:
“The thing I always loved about DC Comics was that you had your mainstream comics that were always coming out, but they also had these different tone comics like Guardians AND The Dark Knight Returns AND All-Star Superman.
It was different from Marvel in that way. That’s something I really want to keep within the studio, that each project will bring a different vision from the artists who are creating it.”
So, while next year Superman the film will be a superhero epic for all ages, Commando Creatures It’s a story of monstrous characters grappling with their dark past.
The show features an assortment of characters both familiar and strange: Frankenstein (David Port), the bride of Frankenstein (Indira Varma), Doctor Phosphorus (Alan Tudyk), the fish Nina Mazursky (Zoe Cao), Weasel and GI Robot (both Sean Gunn) — who are sent on dangerous missions by government official Amanda Waller (Viola Davisresuming his role from Suicide Squad film) and Rick Flag, Sr. (Frank Grillo).
Viewers will surely notice the similarities not only to Gunn’s 2021 DC superhero film, The Suicide Squadbut also his Guardians of the Galaxy trilogy for Marvel. Gunn said:
“I’m used to dealing with the odd, the irregular, the weird. That’s what Guardians and and Commando Creatures it’s a bit like Guardians without sentimentality.
Ultimately, the Guardians are all really good characters, and that’s not necessarily the case with the creatures.”
Commando Creatures will feature both Frankenstein and the Bride, but don’t expect to see them walk awkwardly or grunt. Gunn says that Mary Shelley’s original novel Frankenstein It was more of a reference point in their characterization than the classic Universal horror films starring Boris Karloff (although, of course, he likes those too).
“Part of the fun for me was taking some of the basic elements of Mary Shelley’s story and putting them into this story about the rejected relationship between the Bride and Frankenstein.
Frankenstein is an incredibly eloquent intellectual, but he is still driven by his anger and his rage and his inability to be a real human being, and the inability of the person he loves not to love him back. That’s what drives him.”
But Commando Creatures It’s also full of less familiar faces, like GI Robot. Each episode of the series, following the initial setup, will delve into the backstory and pathos of a different character.
What could be so complicated about a combat robot? Well, we’ll find out.
“There’s an innocence to GI Robot that I hadn’t noticed until Sean got in the booth and started creating this character. His choices for GI Robot give the character this sweet, mechanical innocence. He has this very sad World War II story.
The only time I think he felt at home was with the soldiers he served with in DC’s alternate history of World War II, which involved metahumans.”
Gunn spoke to EW about Commando Creatures from the set of Peacemaker season 2, and is also working on post-production for next year’s season SupermanConsider this series the perfect appetizer for what DC is about to unleash.
“Superman It’s the real beginning of it all, it’s a giant epic. This is a way for people to get a little taste of it and see what it tastes like.
There’s a lot of fun references to other DC stuff, a lot of hints at things that are coming. So I think it’s just a tremendously fun way to start.”
Commando Creatures debuts December 5 on Max. Can’t wait to see the series? Check out the new photos from the show above and below:
