We all heard it. Superhero films were starting to seem to be heated leftovers. Of course, have we still observed them, but the thrill and excitement? He is faded.
The genre that once kicked the door with a wild imagination and a bold narration had turned into a family cycle of clean, lucid, predictable and not very interesting films. While Marvel certainly gave us some pleasures of the crowd, their gender experiments also seemed managed in the same shimmering factory. Several coats of paint, same frame.
Then James Gunn came.
With SupermanGunn did not simply launch the table, built a completely new one. His opinion on Superman is not just a new start for DC, it seems that the adrenaline has shot the entire kind of comic movies necessary.
I went the meditabondo and gritty world of Snyderverse. While Zack Snyder’s vision had the ambition, he did not get the catwalk he deserved. Gunn intervened with a complete restart of the DCU and what is building is radically different. It is colorful. It is strange. It is wild. It is unique. It is deeply personal and refuses to be inscribed. It has the tone of an Actaul comic!
After seeing SupermanNot one but twice, I found myself more excited the second time. It is not just the energy of the film, it is the promise it keeps. The more I think about it, the more it looks like a turning point. A signal that this is not just another cinematic universe, is a creative playground.
Gunn is not interested in repeating the formulas. He is taking care of a universe in which there are no two projects seem the same. Previously he said:
“It is really important for me that each project has its own stamp. This film is very different from the film Rated that we are making, a horror film of the body with Clayface.
“It is very different from the film Sgt. Rock that we are developing. It is very different from Supergirl, which is a spatial fantasy – Craig Gillespie has just come out here a second ago, which has directed it. So each of these films is completely different.”
And that’s where Gunn’s approach is even more exciting, it does not concern the construction of a strictly controlled brand, it is a matter of creating a universe that actually seems the comics.
“What I love of DC comics and graphic novels is that they allowed individual artists and writers to create their own projects, and each of them had their own voice.
“Long Halloween, All-Star Superman, Dark Knight, Watchmen-This things have very little toned in common with each other, except to be part of the set of common characters found in the DC Comics universe. And now we are doing the same thing in the DCU.”
This is the key … voice. DCU of Gunn is not only to connect stories, it is about honoring distinct visions. It is not a great film extensive over 20 chapters. It is more similar to a mixtape, every trace that does its things, bringing its mood.
That freedom is what makes everything feel so fresh. There is new unpredictability. There is risk. There is room for bonkers, wild tones and emotional oscillations and Superman It is only the beginning. Imagine what happens when directors with unique voices enter this universe and learn! .
Gunn’s vision is to reinvent what comics films can be. Give us variety. Give us the style. Give us something we have never seen before. And finally, after years of similarity, we are getting it.
So yes, they are 100% on board. Gunn’s Superman you wake up. It is the shock of this necessary kind and I can’t wait to see how strange, wilder and more personal and more personal will get.
