MCU SPIDER-MAN Director Jon Watts on Why He Left Marvel and Why He’s Unlikely to Return

Director Jon Watts began his career making short films, music videos and TV show episodes before venturing into the world of film. After making the 2015 film Police carstarring Kevin Baconreached a new level of success, being chosen for Marvel Spider-Man: Home Trilogy.

He made those three hugely successful and beloved films in a short time, and the studio was keeping an eye not only for a fourth Spidermanbut also for the highly anticipated Fantastic Four.

He ended up abandoning each of those projects in 2022 and instead opted for this year’s crime thriller, Wolveswhich brings together stars Brad Pitt and George Clooney.

While it feels like he traded one golden ticket for another, Watts got to experience a freedom with this project that he never experienced at Marvel, and it looks like he has no intention of turning back.

Watts not only directed the film, he also wrote the screenplay, and he feels more connected to a project without a story or constraints.

Watts explained his point in a recent interview with THR:

“I was just starting out and Marvel came along, and I take full creative ownership of all those movies, but Spiderman will always be a creation of Stan Lee and Steve Ditko. This was a chance for me to get back to my voice, my vision and my style. Wolves It’s mine, and it feels really good.”

He’s made his mark on the MCU and the Spider-Man story has been told beautifully because of it. I’d love to see him come back, but I think it’s really cool that he’s out there making original movies for us to enjoy.

Wolves will be available to stream on Apple TV+ on September 27.
