Ian McKellen has been approached to play Gandalf again in the director’s film Andy Serkis’next Middle Earth movie The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollumand it’s something he’s open to doing. But, he cautions, directors “better be quick.”
During a recent interview with The Big Issue, McKellan, who played the fan-favourite wizard in Peter Jackson’S The Lord of the Rings AND Hobbits trilogies, offered an update saying:
“The excitement about The Lord of the Rings shows no sign of abating. I can’t tell you more. They just told me there will be more films and that Gandalf will be in it and they hope I will play him.”
The actor added, “When? I don’t know. What’s the script? It’s not written yet. So, they better hurry.” When asked earlier if he’d be interested in returning to the role, he laughed, “If I’m alive.”
It makes sense that Gandalf will be part of this new story, but McKellen knows he can’t play this character forever.
Peter Jackson is producing the film together with his partners Francesca Walsh AND Philippa Boyens who will write the script together with Phoebe Gittins AND The artist Papageorgiou.
A variety of films will “explore untold stories,” and this particular film will obviously focus on Gollum. As you might imagine, there are some familiar faces that could appear in the film, with one of the most notable being Gandalf.
During a previous interview, Jackson spoke openly about the story they intend to tell, offering some insight into why they wanted to tell this tragic tale of Gollum.
Jackson explained: “The character of Gollum/Sméagol has always fascinated me because Gollum reflects the worst of human nature, while his Sméagol side is, supposedly, quite sympathetic.
“I think he resonates with readers and movie audiences because there’s a little bit of both in all of us. We really want to explore his backstory and delve into parts of his journey that we haven’t had time to touch on in the previous films.
“It’s too early to know who will cross his path, but suffice it to say that we’ll be taking a cue from Professor Tolkien.”
Are you excited about The Hunt for Gollum? Do you hope McKellen can play Gandalf again?
