Director Maggie Gyllenhaal is working on his second feature film, The brideat Warner Bros. After making his directorial debut, The Lost Daughterwhich has been nominated for three Academy Awards, this film has a lot of buzz. The star-studded cast includes Cristiano Bale like Frankenstein’s monster; Jessie Buckley as the titular bride; and a supporting cast of Jake Gyllenhaal, Penelope Cruz, Peter SarsgaardAND Annette Bening.
The film “sees a lonely Frankenstein travel to 1930s Chicago to seek the help of a Dr. Euphronius in creating a mate for himself. The two reinvigorate a murdered young woman and the Bride is born.” She is beyond what either of them had anticipated, “igniting a combustible romance, the attention of the police and a wild and radical social movement.”
When asked in a recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter about working with his wife on the film, Peter Sarsgaard he reiterated his previous sentiments, stating that this script is the best he has ever read.
“It’s true. It’s the best thing I’ve ever read. For me, it’s both a great adult film and a great teen film. It’s what everyone hopes for and tries to solve when they make a great film.
The people involved in every department – Christian Bale, Jessie Buckley, Annette Bening, Jonny Greenwood who does the music, Dylan Tichenor who edits, the list goes on and on – are not only great people, but individuals with style and taste.”
This is Gyllenhaal’s second directorial effort, and her husband worked with her on the last film. When asked if he had a say in his role and what the experience was like overall, he elaborated, saying:
“He always says he writes every male part with me in mind, but then offers me the part he thinks I’m best suited for. The bride It’s punk, and it’s fast and very emotional. Also, it’s sometimes violent and it’s wildly romantic.
I don’t think you could say any of those things about The Lost Daughter except maybe that it is violent for a short time, but it is a different kind of violence. The bride It’s so ambitious because the script is really one of the best.
Look, my wife wrote it, so I’ll just say it’s the best script I’ve ever read. It was really satisfying in a lot of ways.”
She continued to rave about her co-stars, saying:
“With Christian Bale, he’s a phenomenal actor who has such devotion. Watching him on set… you know some actors are trying to stay on set. You have to call them by their character’s name and all that bullshit.
They talk with that accent all the time. It’s not like that with him. He just can’t help it. It’s not a choice. It’s not a demand. It’s just the way he is. It changes the set when you have that kind of leadership with him and with Maggie.
Then Jessie is the most abstract, casual, free, present actress you could ever work with. She can also sing and dance, by the way, great. There are great dance numbers and stuff in the movie.
I’m so happy with the way Warner Bros. supported Maggie on the film. It’s great to work with Pam Abdy over there, who I’ve worked with on State of the Garden in the old days. It’s a big studio run by artistically minded people.”
From what I’ve seen and heard so far, it looks like it’s going to be a really interesting movie. The bride The film is currently scheduled for a theatrical release on October 3, 2025.
