I was doubtful, but hopeful, that we would ever be able to announce a fourth season of Ted Lasso It was in the works, but it looks like things are moving in the right direction.
Before the show was made, its creators had developed it as a three-season story, which was continued, previously without the intention of going beyond that. But they could never have predicted how important and beloved the series would become for its fans.
So now, in a major step toward the highly anticipated fourth season of Apple TV+’s hugely popular football comedy, series studio Warner Bros. Television has acquired options on the three original cast members who were hired under the auspices of British syndicate Equity.
I am by Hannah Waddinghamwho plays AFC Richmond owner Rebecca Walton, by Brett Goldsteinwho plays the tough guy Roy Kent and My Friend Jeremy Swiftwho plays director of football operations Leslie Higgins.
After securing the trio, the studio is expected to begin contacting Ted Lasso cast members with SAG-AFTRA contracts whose options have expired, so they will have to make new deals.
In addition to the co-creators/executive producers Jason Sudeikis (Ted Lasso) and Hunting Brendan (Coach Beard), which is believed to include Temple of Juno (John Paul II)
Deadline reports that one of the Ted Lasso OG, Dunster Thread (Jamie Tart), was not picked up, presumably due to a conflict with another series; is on both Prime Video The Devil’s Hour and Apple Surface.
It’s unclear which other stars might be approached for Season 4; the cast has repeatedly said they would be happy to reprise their roles if the opportunity arose. Many would likely make guest appearances.
The cast’s return clears the way for a fourth season to be greenlit, subject to budget and scheduling approval, as actors whose options have expired may have joined other series that have them in prime time.
While communication with the cast is ongoing, early preparations are also being made to open a writers room. If all the pieces fall into place, we’ve heard that production on a fourth season is eyeing an early 2025 start. Representatives for WBTV and Apple TV+ declined to comment.
The start of the greenlight process for Season 4 indicates that the main Ted Lasso driving force on and off screen, Sudeikis, is on board for a new chapter as the studio would not proceed without his consent.
The fate of Ted Lasso has always been up to Sudeikis, who originated the character in NBC Sports videos. While they’re open to the fact that they’d like to extend Ted Lassoone of the biggest and most acclaimed comedies of the last decade, executives from Apple and Warner Bros. have made it clear that it will be up to Sudeikis to decide whether or not to continue the show.
So this is all very exciting and I can’t wait to see the show continue! Stay tuned for updates on the deal for season 4.
