ALIEN: ROMULUS Director Talks Wild Creature Design and PROMETHEUS Connection

Alien: Romulus it was a great Alien movie that really nailed it in the sci-fi horror genre, and I loved it for that! I was so happy with how this movie turned out and it had a killer ending!

I’ve seen the film twice so far and I absolutely love hearing the audience’s amazement at one particular moment, towards the end of the film, when a twisted Xenomorph creature is introduced.

Before I go any further, I must warn you that I may encounter some spoilers.

The creature is unlike anything we’ve seen in the Alien series, as it is a monstrous creature that is part human, part xenomorph, and part engineer.

It’s such a wild design and the reaction it gets from the public when it’s unveiled is so beautiful. It was also an unexpected connection with Ridley ScottThe prequel films of ‘s originated with Prometheus.

In those prequel films, a black substance was introduced that was supposed to improve humanity and make it more suitable for space colonization.

In Romulus, Isabella MercedKay’s character, who is pregnant, is on the verge of death after being attacked by a Xenomorph. To save herself and her baby, she injects herself with the black substance and in the climax of the film gives birth to the terrifying creature.

During a recent interview with Variety, the director was asked about the similarities to the humanoid Xenomorph seen in the 1997 film Alien ResurrectionAND Faith Alvarez he said:

“[My son] I had recently watched all the ‘Alien’ movies with a friend of his, and when the offspring comes out, he says, ‘It’s like ‘Resurrection.’ I hadn’t processed it that way, but it’s true, it’s this abomination that comes out.’

He added: “I was hoping people would get the whole Engineer thing. The black slime is the root of the whole thing that was introduced in ‘Prometheus.’ It’s the root of all life, but also the xenomorphs in particular come out of that thing, which means it has to be inside them. It’s almost the sperm of the xenomorphs.”

“So we thought, if this affects your DNA, and the Engineers clearly come from the same root of life, it made perfect sense to me that [the offspring of a human and a xenomorph] it would have been like this.”

Elsewhere in the interview, Alvarez admitted that the introduction of this creature, for now, will probably raise more questions than answers.

He said: “It is probably a new species, because such a cross has never occurred before.”

I imagine if a sequel were to be made, this new species would be explored more. I wouldn’t be surprised if a sequel was made. The film is receiving positive reception and looks like it will be a solid box office success. I’m excited to see what comes of this franchise as it continues.
