After the creator of X-Men ’97, Handsome DeMayo revealed that Marvel Studios and Disney “stripped” him of the credits for season two because of a “gay pride” post he shared on Instagram, the situation has come to a head.
In March 2024, DeMayo was fired as head writer for X-Men ’97 after completing work on the first two seasons of the X-Men animated series. No explanation was given at the time as to why he was fired, but DeMayo’s recent post has sent everything over the edge.
Now we have new details on why DeMayo was fired. But before we get to that, here’s the statement Marvel released after DeMayo shared his post on social media:
“Mr. DeMayo was terminated in March 2024 following an internal investigation. Given the egregious nature of the findings, we immediately severed ties with him and he no longer has any affiliation with Marvel.”
We’ve now learned the “sensational nature of the findings” thanks to movie insider site The InSneider. The report claims that DeMayo was fired for allegedly sending “photos of himself in various states of undress” to several young staff members.
These photos are said to show DeMayo “wearing superhero costumes and striking sexually suggestive ‘hero’ poses that could be used as ‘inspiration’ for the show.”
Sneider further reports that DeMayo allegedly molested an assistant and emotionally and physically abused staff members.
It has also been reported that Marvel has removed DeMayo’s executive producer credit for the second season of X-Men ’97, and that the company is now rewriting “most” of the new season so that DeMayo’s writing credit can be removed as well.
The report goes on to note that Matthew Chaunceywho was hired to write the third season of X-Men ’97 in July 2024 after DeMayo’s exit, will “most likely” oversee rewrites for season two.
