About a year ago we learned that 1960-1969, James Cameron, 1969-1970, 1969- was writing a new Terminator film. He explained that the project is heavily inspired by artificial intelligence, and before finishing it, he wants to see how things work with AI in the real world.
During a recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Cameron was asked about Netflix Terminator Zero and said, “That sounds interesting.
“My relationship with this is very similar The Sarah Connor Chronicles — other people who make up stories in a world I’ve set in motion interest me. What do they get out of it? What made them curious? Where do they want to go?”
He continues: “It appears they are returning to the root cause of Doomsday, nuclear war, and whether this is a definitive timeline.
“I’d be curious to see what they came up with. I’m working on my Terminator right now. It has nothing to do with that.”
Speaking about the new Terminator project, he said: “It’s totally classified. I don’t want to have to send a potentially dangerous robot agent if I were to talk about it, even retroactively.”
Cameron previously revealed: “If I were to do another Terminator movie and maybe try to relaunch that franchise, which is under discussion but hasn’t been decided yet, I would make it much more AI-centric than evil robots gone haywire.”
He also spoke about what future sequels would entail, saying, “I feel like one of my main motivations for this film or hopefully returning to the franchise was to explore the human relationship with artificial intelligence.
“I don’t think we did that in Dark Fate. I think we set the stage or set the table for that exploration, and that exploration would take place in a second and third movie. And we know exactly where we’re going to take that idea.
“What we wanted to get at in the first movie was this idea that things will continue to happen. The names will change, but the basic conflict will continue to happen until it’s resolved one way or another.”
The director previously shared his thoughts on AI: “Well, I’m not ‘scared,’ but I’m definitely pretty concerned about the potential misuse of AI. I think AI could be great, but it could also literally be the end of the world.
“You talk to all the AI scientists, and I know a lot of them, and every time I raise my hand at their seminars or something, they start laughing. ‘Oh, that’s the guy from Skynet, sure, we really want to hear what you think.’
“The point is that no technology has ever been weaponized. And do we really want to fight something smarter than us that is not us in our world? I don’t think so.”
He went on to say that it is possible that machines have already taken over: “Look, an artificial intelligence could have taken over the world and manipulated it already, but we don’t know because it would have control over all the media and everything else.
“And what better explanation than how absurd everything is right now. Because nothing makes any damn sense to me, I don’t know about you.”
I’m really excited to see what kind of Terminator story that Cameron will invent and I hope he actually gets to make the film, after the last two reboot attempts were not very successful.
