At the end of Marvel Animation’s presentation at D23, Marvel Studios shared some new footage from its upcoming film What if…? spin-off series Marvel Zombiesand this show looks awesome!
During the presentation, Marvel Animation Andrea DiBrianzo confirmed that Marvel Zombies will receive a “hardcore” TV-MA rating and said it will also be a four-episode “event series.”
The film shown revealed that Simu Liu’s Shang-Chi and AwkwafinaKaty are the main characters in one of the stories in the series.
The first clip we watched shows a city overrun by zombies: Shang Chi and Katy are busy fighting them and there is a team of helicopters flying in the sky wiping out the zombies.
Shang-Chi’s father is on one of the helicopters and jumps out to help fight the zombies using the power of the Ten Rings. In the middle of the battle, Chang-Chi is bitten on the arm by a zombie.
As he begins to turn into a zombie and rot creeps up his arm, his father saves him by transferring the Ten Rings to him. The rings crawl up Shang-Chi’s arm and stop the infection from spreading further, but his arm continues to rot.
Left without any protection from the Ten Rings, the father is killed and Shang-Chi and Katy escape on one of the helicopters.
The second clip is set five years after that event and the world is now a Mad Max-style wasteland! There’s a group of people driving around in these Mad Max-style vehicles and Shang-Chi, with his right-hand man, and Katy are in one of them.
As they speed through the desolate desert, a gang of Krees bikers catch up with them and this is the start of a fantastic street battle.
I loved the footage that was shown and the series looks like it could be a blast to watch! We actually get a full-blown Marvel Zombies story brought to life and that’s pretty exciting!
The series is set in an alternate reality and reimagines the Marvel Universe through a new generation of heroes battling an ever-spreading zombie plague.
The Wonders star Iman Vellani has confirmed that she will reprise her role as Kamala Khan, aka Ms. Marvel, in the series, and her character will take center stage in the show.
Vellani said, “We did it all. It was awesome. It was a lot of fun. And I love… there are a lot of great characters in the Marvel Zombies show. And Kamala is kind of the center of the show.”
Vellani also referred to The Lord of the Rings While speaking about the series to explain Kamala’s role, she said: “They described her to me, like, ‘She’s basically the Frodo of the story.’ And I was like, ‘That’s amazing.'”
It is not yet known when the series will be released.
