National Treasure 3 It’s been a long journey, after the first two films came out in 2004 and 2007. But if the last decade or so has taught us anything, it’s that it’s never too late for a great sequel to come out years later and entertain us.
Now, the screenwriter of the film Ted Elliot shared a progress update on the highly anticipated sequel, revealing some new story and character details for fans to discover.
In a recent interview with the National Treasure Hunt podcast (via ScreenRant), Elliot reveals some new details about National Treasure 3also revealing that “no one has yet figured out” what the treasure will be.
Elliot also reveals that he has finished a first draft, although it still needs to be rewritten. As for who might appear in the new film, the screenwriter reveals that he intends to bring back familiar faces in addition to Ben, Abigail, and Riley, and that the film will include multiple antagonists.
Here are some of his other comments on the story:
“Riley has changed the most [than anybody else.] If you only consider the two points that are established for him in the first and second films, in the first one he is the uninformed audience. […] This is the role he plays. He’s the guy who says, “What are you talking about?” In the second one, he wrote a book about cryptohistory.
And he’s right! He knows something that Ben didn’t know about history. I just have to think that this has continued. It becomes more difficult to do the historical exposition because […] there are things [Riley] he can know now. […]
As for the script for the third film, I think there will be a change in the internal relationship between Ben and Riley that I think both actors will really appreciate. […]
Agent Sudusky is dead. I’m treating the TV series as canon […] I’m trying to do something different with the FBI than I did in the previous two films. There’s still the chasers, there’s still the law and order force, but just the way they operate, I’m trying to do something a little different.”
So the show and the first two movies are canon and will be incorporated into this third movie. It’s nice to know that it has a new take on a new story that fans will enjoy as well. Stay tuned for more updates on the movie as it progresses.
