The second season of WEDNESDAY is inspired by THE MASK OF THE RED DEATH by Edgar Allan Poe

Wednesday star Jenna Ortega revealed that the upcoming second season of the series is directly inspired by the classic Edgar Allan Poe tale, The Masque of the Red Death.

In an interview with Vanity Fair, he cited the 1964 film adaptation of Poe’s 1942 work, starring Vincent Price, saying, “I think the vibe we’re trying to convey is a little more horror-inspired. Not to say that suddenly we’re the bloodiest show of all time. I mean, there [are] six-year-olds watching.”

Wednesday creators Alfred Gough AND Miles Millar will lean more into horror tropes this season, and Ortega continues to tease: “We’re doing this thing now where Wednesday is just a little bit appears. She’s a bit of a fly-by-night type, too.”

The series is described as “an investigative mystery, steeped in supernatural elements, that traces Wednesday Addams’ years as a student at Nevermore Academy.” The series follows…

“Wednesday attempts to master his emerging psychic ability, thwart a monstrous series of murders that has terrorized the local town, and solve the supernatural mystery that engulfed his parents 25 years ago, all while navigating his tangled new relationships.”

Speaking previously about what we can expect from season two, Ortega said: “We’re definitely going for a little bit more horror, but it’s really, really exciting because throughout the entire series, even though Wednesday needs a little arc, she never really changes and that’s the wonderful thing about her.”

He continued: “There are some really, really good jokes, and I think everything is bigger, a lot more action-packed. Each episode will probably feel a little bit more like a movie, which is nice.”

The Masque of the Red Death is a Gothic tale that tells the story of a wealthy prince named Prospero who, in an attempt to escape a deadly plague known as the Red Death, secludes himself in an opulent fortified abbey along with a thousand other nobles.

They indulge in lavish parties, ignoring the suffering outside. During a masquerade ball, a mysterious figure dressed as the Red Death appears, moving through the different colored rooms of the abbey. The presence of the figure terrifies the guests and when Prospero confronts it, he falls dead.

The other revelers try to grab the figure, only to discover that there is nothing tangible beneath the mask and robes. One by one, they all succumb to the Red Death, which symbolizes the inevitability of death and the futility of trying to escape it.

The series also sees the return of Louis Guzman coming back like Gomez Addams and Catherine Zeta-Jones back as Morticia Addams.

The cast of the second season also includes Joy Sunday like Bianca, Joanna Lumley like grandma, Emma Myers like Enid, Steve Buscemi like Barry Dort, Billie Piper like Capri, and Graziella Newton like Dr. Fairburn, along with Hunter Doohan, Victor Dorobantu, Moosa Mostafa, Luyanda Unati Lewis-Nyawo, Georgie Farmer, Isaac Ordonez, Evie Templeton, Owen PainterAND Noah Taylor.

Additionally, season two guest stars include Jamie McShane, Frances O’Connor, Haley Joel Osment, Heather Matarazzo, Joonas Suotamo, Fred ArmisenAND Christopher Lloyd.
