As the Cobra Kai the series is about to end, creators Hayden Schlossberg, Josh Faulty AND By Jon Hurwitz look to the future of franchising.
One of the projects they intend to develop is a possible prequel series centered on the classic character of Mr. Miyagi.
During an interview with THR, the creative team was asked about the possibility of seeing some spin-offs and Schlossberg said he would love to dive into Miyagi’s past.
He said: “Absolutely! We are thinking about spin-offs with Cobra Kai all time. Cobra Kai in itself is, in a certain sense, a spin-off of The Karate Kid. We took the bully from The Karate KidWe took that branch and created our own tree, and we think we could do that with all the characters in the series.
“We definitely thought about that as we tied things together with all the characters. We think about the fun of following them into their future, and we also think about the past. It’s one of the reasons we did the Miyagi box story this season.
“Everything opens up these questions about Mr. Miyagi and what his life was like, and it’s something we’ve wanted to do for a while.
“We talked to Robert Mark Kamen, the original writer Karate Kid who based the whole movie on his sensei, who studied Okinawan karate; we talked to him about all of Miyagi’s backstory, which was helpful for the season 6 stuff.
“Now that we’re done, we can actually start getting into this stuff. We’ve just been focused on Cobra Kai and finish it. And now, we’re in the process of editing the last two episodes. Once that’s done, we hope to have some exciting stuff…”
Asked if they would make a series about Mr. Miyagi, Schlossberg continued, “I would say we definitely want to do it and we’ve talked about it.
“But attention has been paid Cobra Kai. As we finish it, we’ll see exactly what path we take in terms of spin-offs, but it’s definitely something we wanted to do. We just want to wait until we’re done with Cobra Kai before getting into the merits.”
I would be interested in a spin-off that explores Mr. Miyagi! I’ve always been curious about his past, especially after The Karate Kid: Part II. And now Cobra Kai season 6 is revealing more of his mysterious past and I’m excited to see where they take this story!
Would you like to see a Mr. Miyagi spin-off prequel series?
