The next DC animated film Crisis on Infinite Earths – Part 3 will present the final performance of Kevin Conroy like Batman. The film’s trailer featured a scene showing Conroy’s Batman facing off Mark HamillThe Joker of.
In that scene, Batman says: “I care about Joker…about Gotham. About justice. And, if it has to end, at least I’m going like this…as Batman!”
The film’s executive producer Butch Lukic recently spoke with CBM and discussed how Conroy recorded his final lines as Batman, also sharing a touching anecdote from the director’s booth.
Lukic said: “Originally, we obviously knew that we were going to have Kevin play Batman for this scene. We didn’t know that at the time and I’m not sure he knew that because it had been a year since he passed away.
“We were joking about it at the time, saying, ‘This is your last animated Batman, blah, blah, blah,’ and he was laughing and joking about it too.”
“In hindsight, it wasn’t meant to be his last performance as the character, but sadly it turned out that way. The lines he did were only two, but he wanted to stay and do the lines for the other Batman, just for fun. [Laughs].
“He was having a great time, but we don’t know if he was sick at the time or if it happened later. Unfortunately, it wasn’t meant to be his last performance, but sadly it is now.”
He also spoke about Mark Hamill’s return as the Joker, saying: “We told Hamill once… we were like, ‘Look, Kevin’s going to do it,’ and he would always call us if Kevin would say even a couple of lines.
“He said, ‘As long as Kevin does it, I’m in,’ and that was it. Even though he had said a couple of years earlier that he was retiring from The Joker, he wanted to do it.
“Again, he had no idea what the outcome was going to be for Kevin. He was just doing it because it was a good final statement for Batman: The Animated Series for both of them.”
It’s sad that Conroy has left us, we’ve lost a legend, but at least we can enjoy another short experience hearing him voice Batman one last time.
Crisis on Infinite Earths – Part 3 is now available digitally and will arrive in a limited edition 4K UHD SteelBook and Blu-ray package on July 23.
