of Marvel Studios Eternals The film was not a major success for the studios and is considered both a critical and commercial failure. When it was released, it became one of the worst-reviewed MCU films.
Then came Marvel’s Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, which earned the lowest score on Rotten Tomatoes for a Marvel film.
Marvel Studios has learned that fans aren’t demanding an Eternals sequel, as studio head Kevin Feige confirms there are no current plans for Eternals 2.
In an interview with Inverse, he said: “There are no immediate plans for Eternals 2. There are, and I think you saw maybe in a trailer that we released recently, an acknowledgement of some of those events. Some giant things have come out of the ocean.”
I’m sure we’ll see some of these Eternals characters again in the future, but most likely not in a sequel.
Eternals could and should have been a much better movie. This thing was supposed to be epic on every level and tell an incredibly strong story with strong characters, but none of these characters ever felt like Eternal beings who had accumulated thousands of years of knowledge.
This is just one of the many things that didn’t work for me with this film. When I previously talked about the reception of the film, Kumail Nanjiani She said:
“I knew it wasn’t me. I think there were a lot of things. I love that movie and I’m very proud of it. I’ve seen it a lot of times because it’s my kind of movie, and a lot of my stuff I don’t watch.
“It was really, really difficult because Marvel thought the movie was going to get really, really good reviews, so they lifted the embargo early and put it into some fancy film festivals and sent us on a big world tour to promote the movie right as the embargo was being lifted.
“The reviews were terrible, and I was all too aware of that. I read every review and checked too much. I think there was a strange soup in the atmosphere that that film was so criticized for, and I don’t think much of it had to do with the actual quality of the film.
“It was really hard and that’s when I thought it was unfair to me and to Emily and that I couldn’t approach my work this way anymore. Some things have to change, so I started therapy and I still talk about it with my therapist.”
Eternals follows a race of immortal beings with superhuman powers who have been secretly living on Earth for thousands of years, but have only been ordered to interfere when evil Deviants are involved, which is why they have had no hand in stopping Thanos or any other terrible war or event in history.
