Author The Bartender JD is putting a new twist on the terrifying 1990 horror film Flat linewith a new novel based on this concept.
The story will give new life to the franchise that began in 1990 with the director Joel Schumacher and a fantastic and crazy cast that included young actors Kiefer Sutherland, Julia Roberts, Kevin Bacon, Billy Baldwin AND Oliver PlattThe movie was remade in 2017, but this book won’t tell exactly the same story.
The original was published by Columbia and followed a group of five medical students who experiment by subjecting each other to near-death experiences, giving them glimpses of the afterlife, before being suddenly revived. The results become increasingly dangerous as they test the consequences of tampering with the boundaries between life and death.
Barker said the scribe Peter Filardi has recovered the rights to his original screenplay, and the author has piqued his interest with a twist on the original that takes the resuscitation story down a different path than the original or a later remake. The novel is based on that screenplay, not the film, and Joel Gotler of Intellectual Property Group will handle the screen rights.
“We are thrilled to have J.D. Barker on board for this project,” Filardi said. “His ability to craft suspenseful and thought-provoking stories makes him the perfect choice to reinvigorate the ‘Flatliners’ franchise for a new generation.”
Barker, whose books include Dracul, the fourth monkey AND Behind the closed doorintends to focus more on the supernatural element than Filardi did in the original.
“The concept of Flat line has always fascinated me,” Barker said. “I’m honored to have the opportunity to explore these themes of mortality, consequence, and the unknown in a novel format. Fans can expect a story that honors the spirit of the original while pushing into new, uncharted territory. We’re going to scare the crap out of you.”
I love the original movie and this looks like it would be a great read!
