Emmy Award-winning actor Mandy Patinkin (The Princess Bride, Homeland) has joined the cast of the NBC medical drama, Brilliant mindsAlso known as the title Doctor WolfThe series, which features Zacharias Quinto (Heroes, Star Trek), cast Patinkin in a recurring role, as well as Steve Howey AND André DeShields as a guest star, showrunner Michael Grassi announced Sunday at the Television Critics Association press tour in Pasadena.
Both Howey and Patinkin will star in two episodes.
Patinkin will play an esteemed family doctor who joins the staff at Bronx General Hospital and brings his “unconventional methods to the workplace.”
His affinity for house calls and long-standing relationships with patients earns him the respect of our chief, Dr. Wolf, and fosters a mentor-like relationship between the two men.” According to Grassi, “he really rocks our world.”
Howey plays a “rough motorcycle mechanic” who turns to Dr. Wolf for help with a gunshot wound and is “forced to make a heartbreaking decision.” De Shields plays “an Alzheimer’s patient in an end-of-life care facility” who Dr. Wolf helps reunite with his family.
The show follows the work of Dr. Oliver Wolf, a larger-than-life neurologist. The main character is inspired by Dr. Oliver Wolf SacksBritish neurologist and naturalist; many of his studies have been recounted in his non-fiction books, The Man Who Mistook His Wife for a Hat AND An anthropologist on Mars.
The best known adaptation of Dr. Sacks’ novels was Awakeningsthe Oscar-nominated film starring Robin Williams like Dr. Malcolm Sayer.
