This week’s retro trailer is for the classic 1985 sci-fi thriller about artificial intelligence. DARIO This is a movie I haven’t watched since I was a kid, and after watching the trailer again, it’s a movie I absolutely need to see again!
Now that artificial intelligence is taking over the world, it will be interesting to rewatch this movie and see what the vision of artificial intelligence was in the 80s.
DARIO centered on a young boy named Daryl (Barrett-Oliver), who is found wandering aimlessly and suffering from amnesia.
He is taken in by a kind foster family, the Richardsons, who name him Daryl, after the acronym found on his ID bracelet: Data-Analyzing Robot Youth Lifeform. Initially, Daryl seems like a normal, if exceptionally gifted, child.
He excels in his studies and sports, demonstrating extraordinary abilities that soon raise suspicions about his true nature.
As the story unfolds, it is revealed that Daryl is no ordinary boy, but a sophisticated government experiment: a human-looking android with advanced artificial intelligence.
When the military learns of his whereabouts, they attempt to take Daryl back, viewing him as valuable property rather than a sentient being with emotions and relationships.
Daryl’s adoptive parents and his new friends must then band together to protect him from the authorities. The film has elements of a touching family drama with exciting action sequences, making it a memorable piece of 80s cinema.
