Matt Reeves’ DC TV Series Arkham Asylum Cancelled

Matt Reeves’ DC TV Series Arkham Asylum Cancelled

Mattia Reeves and his team have developed a Arkham Asylum series for Max for quite some time, but the project was abandoned by Warner Bros.

The project was developed by the writer and showrunner Antonio Camposand was initially supposed to be set in Reeves’ universe The Batman.

This version of the series will not continue, but Variety reports that it is possible that “a new project set in the infamous Gotham City asylum could be developed in the future.”

Before this news, the last update we had was that James Gunn confirmed that Reeves’ as-yet-untitled Arkham Asylum series will be set in his DCU.

Gunn responded to a social media post asking if Reeves was working on any other DC projects besides Batman – Part II, The Penguinand the as-yet-untitled Arkham Asylum spin-off series.

Gunn confirmed that these are the only titles the director is currently developing. He then revealed that the Arkham series will be set in the upcoming DCU.

When asked for further clarification, Gunn said, “Yes. We love Matt as a director and producer, so he’ll be producing stories both within his Batman universe and within the DCU.”

I wonder if Reeves’ attempt to incorporate Arkham Asylum series into the DCU led to its cancellation.

Speaking previously about the Arkham series, Reeves said: “We actually have now [moved] more in the realm of what exactly would happen in the world of Arkham as far as our movie and some of the characters and their origins… almost leaning into the idea of… it’s like a horror movie or a haunted house that is Arkham.

“The idea, again the way Gotham is a character in the movie, I really want Arkham to exist as a character. You come into this environment and meet these characters in a way that feels really fresh.

“And so in our work on Gotham, that story started to evolve, and it started to feel [like]”Wait, we should really focus on this.” And then that’s where it all ended.”

It seems like it would have been a really cool and interesting series. It’s a shame that WB and DC Studios passed on it.
