Henry Cavill’s HIGHLANDER Reboot Shoots in January, Chad Stahelski Teases JOHN WICK-Inspired Action

Henry Cavillthe long-awaited reboot of the sci-fi cult classic set in Scotland mountaineer has received an exciting new update. The film will finally begin shooting in January next year.

This news comes from the director Chad Stahelskiwho told Collider: “We’re starting shooting in January in Scotland, so that’s why I’m going there right after I leave. On Monday I’m going to Scotland to do the final location scouting.”

The director also teased the action of the film and explained that it will be inspired by the action in the John Wick films.

He said, “I’ll keep it to myself. Most of the audience, I’ll use the gun analogy, most of what you know about gunfights or car chases because most of us aren’t involved in gunfights, or car chases, or sword fights, we learn that through movies.”

“And what those movies show you is about 95% bullshit. You don’t fight 50 guys with your bare hands and then walk away, but it’s fun. It’s wish fulfillment.

“So John Wick, we know it’s a cartoon, I know it’s not, but we have fun with that too. But we do tactical reloads, we try to do fire manipulations, things like the pros do, like the military does. But then we have fun with it, you know? The sword work is very similar.”

I can’t wait to see what these epic sword fights will be like in the movie! I hope these action sequences end up being unlike anything we’ve seen before.

Cavill previously shared how much of a fan he is of the franchise and then said that the film’s script is “amazing” and that the movie will have “big twists.”

He said: “I am a mountaineer fans, they are very funny movies. Obviously I watched them when I was much younger and have since re-watched them, but also the TV series.

“I really liked the lore behind it, that sense of a tragic warrior with more story to tell than a cool guy with a sword, doing cool stuff, and that goes even deeper.

“What they’ve done so far and what we’re doing with the development of the script is extraordinary, I think people are going to be really, really happy.

“Big swings are important. You play it safe. You’ll just say, ‘Eh, I guess that’s OK?’ But if you make a big swing, people either love it or hate it.”

Stahelski has previously spoken about the film, saying it will include both familiar characters and “elements” from the ’90s TV series.

He said: “We are trying to make our own history. [and it] It involves a lot of the same characters and stuff like that. But we’ve also brought in elements from all the TV shows. We’re trying to create a kind of prequel to The Gathering.”

The Gathering refers to the culmination of the almost eternal battle between immortals. He went on to explain that they are setting this up to expand and grow the story: “So, we have room to grow the property.”

“We have ideas for days about how to create the coolest characters and turn them into an epic TV show. I think it’s a very, very rich mythology.”

The original from 1986 mountaineer film starring Christopher Lambert, Sean Connery, AND Clancy Brown as immortal beings, hunting each other down and gathering more power. The classic tagline of the film was: “There can only be one.”

Stahelski also explained that they are taking the best narrative elements of the franchise and implementing them into a single story that will be spread across a trilogy of films:

“I think the TV series captured a lot of great things that weren’t in the feature film, among viewers and all different kinds of immortals. How do we get all of that into feature film mode before we trickle it down into the world of TV?

“Well, let’s restructure it in parts, let’s look at it like a TV show, let’s look at it like a high-level trilogy. How do we tell the story of The Gathering, The Quickenings, The Immortals, and how do we really build this world that’s even bigger than the original plan?

“That’s what we’re restructuring right now. We’re taking all the good material that we had before I got involved in the project from the script; we’re reworking the script to give us really good chapters one, two, and three; and we’re expanding the world.”

He also spoke about his vision for the film, saying, “The vision that we’re trying to convey and what we’re trying to develop, I compare it a lot to Star Wars. The first one is a very satisfying ending, but it leaves the door open and that’s kind of how I see it.

“I would really like to expand it to three. I see The Gathering taking place over three. It’s complicated, don’t get me wrong, that’s why we’re still developing it. We want to be able to tell three complete stories that all fit together.

“I think that the Star Wars trilogy, at least until The Empire Strikes BackIt’s a good example of how we want to process it.”

It has been revealed that the film is scheduled for release in 2026.
