Stranger things rising star Joseph Quinn stars in the impressive cast of the highly anticipated sequel Gladiator II from the returning director Ridley Scott.
Quinn recently opened up about collaborating with the hit director on his next film, the follow-up to his 2000 epic historical drama, which won the Oscar for Best Picture and earned Scott a Best Director nomination.
Quinn was delirious Men’s Health of Scott, who celebrated his 86th birthday in November: “He’s a creator of worlds. He creates these films that completely transport you, and that’s a very rare thing to do.
“I, like you, was a big fan of his films: I remember watching them Blade Runner as a kind of rite of passage with my father when I was younger; Gladiator it was a really fundamental film for me; Thelma and Louise, American Gangster, AlienObviously.
“There are so many of them and there’s such variety in that body of work that speaks to the caliber of filmmaker he is and the kind of creativity he’s able to harness and weaponize.”
She continued: “Watching him go through these brutal shooting days… as you said, he’s not 32 anymore. But he carries himself with such vigor, and thirst, for life and also for cinema, still—he just loves it, and that’s very infectious.
“Working with him… I never expected to do that, obviously, and so I was incredibly grateful. I just tried, as we all did, to be as present as possible and understand that this was a very rare thing.
“Aside from making the film itself, it was a very rare experience as a human being to witness ancient Rome. He built ancient Rome! Not many people can do that: Ridley Scott can do that.”
Quinn continued to speak about the film’s legacy, saying, “We were certainly aware of the legacy of the first film, so we wanted to pay homage to that and understand that it’s one of those films that moves a lot of people, including me.
“It was a little daunting to be back in that world, but it was also extremely exciting. Yes, I play one of the emperors there, and it was a really incredible experience. And that’s all I can say.”
The movie stars Paul Mescal like Lucio, Denzel Washington, Connie Nielsen again like Lucilla, and Joseph Quinn like Emperor Geta. Fred Hechinger will play the emperor Caracalla.
