Andy Serkis previews THE HUNT FOR GOLLUM, says some LOTR characters ‘could return’

Andy Serkis to direct upcoming film The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollumproduced by Peter Jackson, who recently offered some more insights.

When asked about the film in an interview with Popverse, Serkis said, “It’s so early; it would be unfair to commit to anything at this point.”

He then went on to say that some Lord of the Rings characters might return for the film. He said: “But I will say it will be a deep dive where we will investigate the character of Gollum.”

“There may be characters we recognize who may return. I won’t say who.”

It will be interesting to see which characters they bring back in the film, but the most obvious is Ian McKellan’s Gandalf. The actor previously said he heard the character would be involved.

He said, “But there is no script, there is no offer, there is no plan.” When asked if he was interested in returning to the role, he replied with a chuckle, “If I were alive.”

The screenplay was written by Fran Walsh AND Philippa Boyenswith Phoebe Gittins AND Arty Papageorgiouand “explore storylines yet to be told.” This particular film will obviously focus on Gollum.

Speaking about why they tell this story, Jackson said: “The character of Gollum/Sméagol has always fascinated me because Gollum reflects the worst of human nature, while his Sméagol side is, supposedly, quite sympathetic.

“I think he resonates with readers and movie audiences, because there’s a little bit of both in all of us. We really want to explore his backstory and delve into the parts of his journey that we haven’t had the time to deal in previous films.

“It’s too early to know who will cross his path, but suffice it to say that we will take our cues from Professor Tolkien.”

What other Middle-earth characters do you think would make sense to include in this story?
