David Corenswet is about to step into the role of Superman for the first time, and he has several roles to fill, as there have been many great actors who have played Clark Kent on both the big and small screens over the years.
One of them is Brandon Routhwho we saw in the role in the 2006 film The Return of Superman. Routh’s big screen career was only interrupted by that film, but he returned to the role many years later, as the The Kingdom come version of the legendary DC Comics hero for the CW’s Crisis on Infinite Earths television event, and with those experiences under his belt, he has a few things to say to his successor.
Routh was a guest on a spotlight panel at ACE Superhero Comic Con 2024 and was asked if he had any advice for the next actor to play the role, David Corenswet.
Routh said: “I think the most important thing for me about Superman is to always recognize the non-physical superpowers that he has. It may be trivial to connect this to the “teaching a man to fish” story, but that’s literally how I see it, and it’s very appropriate to be the thing.
“If you save people all the time, everywhere, maybe they will never learn to save themselves. This does not mean that it does not save them, but it just means that Superman’s teaching, personality, appearance, human communication, understanding can give us inclusion.
“For me Superman is pure love, he doesn’t judge. He has to make some tough choices and stop people from doing bad things, but my goal for Superman is for him to be the man that everyone can be in their own person… maybe without all the flying and all that other stuff.
“But he is an example, the best of humanity, and he could teach us to do so, not only with his actions, but by invoking the truth.”
It’s a fresh and sweetly optimistic take on the superhero, but it fits. I think each of the Superman actors so far have been able to bring some of that love into their performances, and I hope Corenswet does too.
The new Superman will tell the story of “Superman’s journey to reconcile his Kryptonian heritage with his human upbringing as Clark Kent of Smallville, Kansas. He is the embodiment of truth, justice and the American way, guided by human kindness in a world that sees kindness as old-fashioned.”
Superman stars David Corenswet as Clark Kent/Superman; Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane; Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor; Nathan Fillion as Green Lantern; Isabela Mercede as Hawkgirl; Edi Gathegi as Michael Holt/Mr. Terrific; Skyler Gisondo as Jimmy Olsen; María Gabriela de Faría in the role of Angela Spica, aka The Engineer; Sara Sampaioas Eva Teschmacher; Terence Rosemore like Otis; AND Beck Bennett as Steve Lombard.
Superman will launch the cinematic portion of DC Studios’ Gods and Monsters: Part 1. The theatrical release is scheduled for July 11, 2025.
