Judi Dench criticizes warnings in the theater: “If you are so sensitive, don’t go to the theater”

Judi Dench he recently talked about alarms in the theater and thinks that if people are too sensitive, maybe they should just stay at home.

Dench was surprised to learn that the public is regularly warned about potentially distressing content, including abuse, violence and loud noises.

Dench told Britain’s Radio Times: “Do they? That must be a pretty long warning before King Lear or Titus Andronicus.

He added: “I understand why they exist, but if you’re that sensitive, don’t go to the theatre, because you could be very shocked. Where is the surprise in seeing it and understanding it in your own way?”

Dench isn’t the only actor to think so. Ralph Fiennes previously the theatergoers had “softened up”.

He explained: “The impact of theater should be to shock you, and it should be to disturb you, I don’t think you should be prepared for these things. It’s the shock, it’s the unexpected, that’s what makes a theater act so exciting.”

Also Sir Ian McKellen railed against the use of trigger warnings in theaters, saying: “I think it’s ridiculous. I rather enjoy being surprised by loud noises and outrageous behavior on stage.”

I just assumed that people who went to the theater to see a show knew what they were getting into when they showed up.
