Top Gun: nonconformist director Joseph Kosinski teamed up with Brad Pitt for his next feature film Formula 1. The film is an Apple Original Films and Warner Bros will handle the theatrical release, scheduled for June 27, 2025.
In the film, Pitt plays a seven-time world champion Formula 1 driver who comes out of retirement to race again and also to mentor a promising rookie. The actor will also drive a real race car in a real race for the film.
The film was shot during the Grand Prix weekends and includes the rest of the cast Kerry Condon, Javier Bardem, Damson Idris, Tobias Menzies, Sarah Niles, Kim Bodnia AND Samson Kayo.
Pit previously spoke about the film, saying: “The atmosphere is fantastic, being able to be a part of it and tell our story. [F1] the teams opened the doors for us. I play a guy who raced in the 90s who has a terrible accident and disappears, to race in other disciplines.
“His friend, played by Javier Bardem, the owner of the team, contacts him. They are last on the grid, they haven’t scored a single point. But they have a young phenom, played by Damson Idris, and they bring me in as a kind of Hail Mary. You’ve never seen speed, you’ve never seen G-forces like this, the footage is really, really exciting.”
Speaking about how they will shoot this film, it was explained: “They spent 18 months using what they learned on Top Gun Maverick to develop the smallest 6K mobile camera ever designed to bring the viewer into the cockpit. A cockpit in which their stars will actually drive.
“Right. Brad Pitt driving an F1 car from Silverstone onwards. The car was designed by Mercedes and is already being tested (you may have seen a video online). As are their actors, in simulation and in real life. Lewis Hamilton is in daily communication and advises on plot and script to ensure it is the most accurate racing film ever made.”
The filmmaking team is also said to be “determined to make the most accurate and impressive racing film anyone has ever seen”. Tom Cruise even offered to do some extra driving if they needed him.
Kosinski said it’s “coming fast” and explained that they’re shooting it using techniques they learned while making it Top Gun: nonconformist.”
He said: “It’s fascinating. I can’t wait to show people behind the scenes. We will drive around the track with real cars and try to apply everything I learned in Top Gun to Formula One. It will be funny.”
He also discussed the way the film was shot, saying, “Certainly seeing people react to an authentically shot film like Top Gun makes us all feel good that our approach works and is appreciated by audiences.”
He went on to talk about applying this approach to his next film, saying, “It’s almost funny to me to see people so in love with real photography. The younger ones almost didn’t see much of it.
“They’re so used to CGI [computer-generated images] being a tool of great films that when you actually shoot something, it feels innovative.
“This is exactly the Formula 1 approach… shooting the real races and the real cars and capturing them. It will be a huge but exciting challenge for me.”
Kosinski is a great director and I’m excited to see what he brings to this film.
