Sony Pictures Classics has released the trailer for an Irish rap film titled Patella, and it looks like a lot of fun! The film premiered at Sundance this year and everyone who saw it seemed to love it.
The film is based on the origin story of Irish-language rap trio Kneecap, and stars original band members Mo Chara, Móglaí Bap and DJ Próvaí (also known as Liam Óg Ó hAnnaidh, Naoise Ó Cairealláin, JJ Ó Dochartaigh).
In the film, “When fate brings Belfast teacher JJ into the orbit of self-proclaimed ‘lowlife scum’ Naoise and Liam Og, the needle drops on a hip hop act like no other.
“Rapping in their native Irish language, KNEECAP quickly become the unlikely figureheads of a civil rights movement to save their native language.
“But the trio must first overcome the police, paramilitaries and politicians who seek to silence their provocative sound, while their anarchic approach to life often makes them their own worst enemies.
“KNEECAP play themselves in this fiercely original sex, drugs and hip-hop biopic, raising a global rallying cry for Native cultures.”
Michael Fassbender he also stars in the film with Simone Kirby, Jessica Reynolds, Fionnuala FlahertyAND Josie Walker.
“There are 80,000 native Irish speakers in Ireland. 6,000 live in Northern Ireland. Three of them have become a rap group called Kneecap. This anarchic trio from Belfast become unlikely figureheads for a civil rights movement to save their native language.
“Erupting from an often unpredictable and noisy post-Troubles Belfast, Liam Óg Ó hAnnaidh, Naoise Ó Cairealláin, JJ Ó Dochartaigh leap onto the screen to play themselves in this intense and incredibly funny tale of Kneecap’s origins, with Fassbender in tow in the role of the charismatic father figure turned political martyr.
“Armed with a blend of English and native Irish verses and fiery, politically charged rhymes, Kneecap’s music takes us on a fun, ketamine-fueled journey to encounter the meaning of pure defiance.”
Patella is directed by Irish director Rich Peppiatt, making his first narrative feature and winning the Next Audience Award at Sundance.
The film will be released in US theaters in August!
