Warner Bros. Animation and DC Studios are developing a Blue Beetle animated series that will continue the adventures of Jaime Reyes that began with the live-action film.
It is explained that “the series will be based on the film… but will deviate from telling the same story. Instead, the show will create its own story that, if successful, could potentially lead to the big-screen return of the giant blue bug played by Xolo Maridueña.”
The director of the film Angelo Manuel Soto and writer Gareth Dunnet-Alcocer will be the executive producer of the series together with John Ricard, producer of the film.
The project has been in development since the beginning of this year with Miguel Puga (The Casagrandes) as showrunner and director of the project Cristian Martinez (Women of the Movement, Good Trouble) set as writer.
As for the voice cast, several actors have been contacted and DC “has received a positive response regarding returns.” I assume many of the cast members will be reprising their roles from the film.
I didn’t really like the movie because the story and script were weak and the filmmakers didn’t do anything unique or interesting with the character. It was just that mediocre superhero origin story movie we’ve seen over and over again.
Perhaps the animated series will be more entertaining than the film as the creative team will have the opportunity to go wild with the animation a little more.
