Todd McFarlane Calls Possible SPIDER-MAN/SPAWN Crossover Comic Book ‘Huge Undertaking’

Todd McFarlane has had some fun with comic book character crossover stories in the past with Spawn, including Witchblade and Batman. But fans have wondered over the years whether McFarlane would ever achieve a Spider-Man/Spawn crossed.

As you know, McFarlane had an incredible run with Spider-Man at Marvel Comics in the late ’80s and early ’90s before leaving and launching Image Comics, where he brought Spawn to life. It would be really cool to see what that story would be like!

The question is: is this something McFarlane will eventually get to? McFarlane has collaborated with Marvel on various projects over the years, and during an interview with CB, the cartoonist was asked if these collaborations could lead to a Spider-Man/Spawn crossover comic.

McFarlane said: “I don’t know if that’s going to happen. I have conversations with Marvel on a semi-regular basis, and this is the only topic of conversation we have. Usually, it’s a 20-second conversation. It’s like, ‘Todd, are you closer to thinking about it?’ And it’s like, ‘No, not really.'”

So, it sounds like Marvel would love the crossover, but it’s a project McFarlane isn’t personally prepared to tackle just yet.

Unlike Spawn/Batman AND Batman/SpawnMcFarlane wants to handle both writing and art duties when telling this Spider-Man/Spawn story.

He explained: “It’s a huge undertaking for me because it has to be Spider-Man/Spawn and I have to do all the artwork. Anything less than that isn’t getting it right.

“So I just need to be able to see myself clearly so I can take the time that I need to and not feel like I’m kind of here, and kind of here, and I’m rushing things, because it’s going to show paper.

“I need to be able to channel all the things people like into my artwork as I did it regularly and put it back on paper.”

We’ll just have to wait and see if McFarlane ever makes that commitment and dedicates that much time to developing this story, but for now it’s a project he’s not really thinking about.

McFarlane paid homage to his ’87 covers Incredible Spider-Man #298 AND Incredible Spider-Man #299 with Generation no. 298 AND #299 during “War on 300”.

In 2020, McFarlane shared “a momentous occasion in comic book history,” which was his first official artwork featuring Spider-Man and Spawn together. It was for the cover of the Overstreet Price Guide, and that’s what initially got fans excited about a possible crossover comic.
