Apple TV+ has released an image from Taika Waititithe next fantasy adventure series Time Banditsand offers a first look at the main characters.
Actors pictured include Lisa Kudrow, Tadhg Murphy, Roger Jean Nsengiyumva, Kal El Tuck, Kiera ThompsonAND Rune Temte.
This series is a retelling of Terry Gilliamit’s a 1981 classic, a film I loved as a child! I still love it and hope this series captures the greatness of that original film.
The show reinvents the classic story and has been described as a comedic journey through time and space featuring a ragtag group of thieves led by Kudrow’s character, Penelope, and their newest recruit: an eleven-year-old history nerd named Kevin.
Waititi spoke about his experience with him watching the original film EW, saying: “I had never seen anything before. I remember being scared of many things. At the time, many children’s films were not as inventive and imaginative.”
Speaking about choosing Kudrow for the series, the director said: “I love Lisa Kudrow and thought it would be great to see her lead a gang of idiots through time.”
Waititi also teased that some other familiar faces will appear throughout the series. “I enjoyed working with the cast and all the actors we brought in. We have recurring actors who change roles in different episodes. They have it in the movie too. It’s kind of Monty Python thing, where people come back and play a different character.
Taika developed the series together with Jemaine Clement, who said: “Most of the things Taika and I have done have been very economical. He’s done a lot of big budget stuff, but I haven’t been on this side of big budget.
“So it was great to have a bigger paint box to work with. But I always enjoy working with Taika. We have a real understanding with each other. I forget that when I work with other writers or directors, there’s a little more explaining that has to take place.”
He added: “There are some you would expect and some you might not expect. Let’s go from the time of prehistoric dinosaurs to the 1990s. There are some medieval places like medieval England and medieval Africa. And let’s go to the Ice Age. It is funny.
The series will consist of ten episodes and I hope Waititi and his creative team manage to make something fantastic with this one.
