Holly Hunter is set to lead the cast of the next film Star Trek series at Paramount+ Star Trek: Starfleet Academy.
Hunter will play the captain and chancellor of the Academy, presiding over both the faculty and a new class of Starfleet cadets as they learn to navigate the galaxy in the 32nd century.
I’ll be honest, I didn’t have Holly Hunter joining the Star Trek franchise on my bingo card! But she will be amazing in the series!
The series comes from co-showrunners Alex Kurtzman and Noga Landau who said in a statement: “It feels like we’ve spent our entire lives watching Holly Hunter be an absolute genius.
“To have his extraordinary authenticity, courage, sense of humor and all-out brilliance at the helm of ‘Starfleet Academy’ is a gift to all of us and to the lasting legacy of Star Trek.”
The series will follow the adventures of a new class of Starfleet cadets as they come of age in one of the most legendary locations in the galaxy.
The series will introduce us to “a young group of cadets who come together to pursue a common dream of hope and optimism. Under the watchful, demanding eyes of their instructors, they will discover what it takes to become a Starfleet officer as they navigate budding friendships, explosive rivalries, first loves, and a new enemy that threatens both the Academy and the Federation itself.
Kurtzman and Landau previously stated: “Admission to Starfleet Academy is now open! Explore the galaxy! Captain your destiny! For the first time in over a century, our campus will reopen to admit individuals age 16 or older Earth (or species equivalent) who dream of surpassing their physical, mental, and spiritual limits, who value friendship, camaraderie, honor and devotion to a cause greater than themselves.
“The courses will be rigorous, the instructors will be among the brightest lights in their respective fields, and those accepted will live and study side-by-side with the most diverse student population ever admitted. Today we encourage all who share our dreams, goals and values to join a new generation of visionary cadets as they take their first steps toward creating a bright future for us all. Apply today! Ex Astris, Scientia!”
Starfleet Academy will begin filming in Toronto this summer, and will be filmed on the largest contiguous set ever built for a Star Trek series, “a central academic atrium that will span two floors and include an amphitheater, classrooms, a cafeteria and an idyllic tree-lined passageway.”
The main episode of the series was written by Gaia Violo. CBS Studios produces in association with Secret Hideout and Roddenberry Entertainment. The series is distributed by Paramount Global Content Distribution.
