Francis Ford Coppola recently premiered his passion project Megalopolis at the Cannes Film Festival and during a press conference after the screening, the director spoke about the state of the film studio system and harshly criticized it.
When asked to comment on the state of the film industry and whether the best place for his film is streaming, the director said, “Streaming is what we call home video.”
Coppola then added that he hopes his dystopian epic finds a home in “a big theater with 600-700 people.” At this point, he continued taking photos of the studio system.
He said: “I fear that the film industry has become more about people being hired to service their debts because film studios have big, big debts. And the job isn’t so much making good films, the job is making sure they pay their debts.”
He went on to say that the studios may eventually become extinct: “Obviously, new companies like Amazon, Apple, and Microsoft, they have a lot of money, so it may be that the studios that we’ve known for so long, some wonderful ones, aren’t going to be more here in the future.
The studio system is definitely stuck in a rut as they mostly keep bringing out the same things over and over again with sequels and reboots. There is very little originality supported by Hollywood these days.
The sad truth is that AI might as well run and write everything because that’s what the studio system has become. True creativity is not encouraged in the academic system.
