The next remake of Jane Fonda’s 1968 science fiction film Barbarella hero Sydney Sweeney is making progress at Sony.
The studio is in talks with Jane Goldmann (Kick ass, Kingsman) AND Darling Ross to write the screenplay, as well Edgar Wright (Night of the Living Dead, Last night in Soho) to direct the film. He was previously rumored to be in talks, so it has now been confirmed.
Barbarella is still in development given Sweeney’s busy schedule, and if the deal goes through, Wright will also be deeply involved in preparing his The runner restart with Glen Powell protagonist, so the project will not be the next for either of the two talents.
Wright had his eye on the project for some time, meeting with Sweeney soon after his first announcement, but committed to developing the project only as something he would potentially direct.
The studio and Wright have strong ties dating back to its box office success child driver, and the tone that Sony and Sweeney have chosen for this project is in keeping with the fun and creative visual style that the director is known for.
Not much is known about this version, but the 1968 pic directed by Roger Vadim follows a 41st century astronaut who sets out to find and stop the evil scientist Durand Durand, whose positronic ray threatens to bring evil back to the galaxy.
The film wasn’t a major box office success, but has since become a cult classic, and in 2020 the Forest estate announced plans for a new film.
Can’t wait to see this remake? Does Edgar Wright’s involvement sweeten the deal?
