Disney is reportedly developing the KINGDOM HEARTS film as a hybrid live-action/CGI project

A pair of new reports have emerged regarding Disney Studios’ development of a film adaptation of Square Enix’s iconic action RPG franchise Kingdom of Hearts.

There have been rumors about this project over the years, and while a Kingdom of Hearts the film has not been officially greenlit, a feature film is in development.

This news comes from in-house contributors DanielRPK and The DisInsider. Disney is said to be developing the project as a live-action/CGI hybrid, in the vein of the recent Sonic the Hedgehog films.

He continues by reporting that the Kingdom of Hearts the film adaptation has been in the works at Disney since April 26, and if the project comes to fruition, it will be a big theatrical release.

DanielRPK also said that the next main installment of the Kingdom of Hearts series, Kingdom Hearts 4will launch in 2025. This will bring the franchise back into the spotlight just in time for a potential film adaptation, should Disney decide to move forward with the project.

There were previous reports of an animation Kingdom of Hearts the film was in the works for Disney+. Then, in 2003, The Disney Channel greenlit a pilot for a television adaptation of Kingdom of Hearts but I didn’t give it a series order.

The decision was due to the difficulties in keeping the series in line with the ever-expanding universe of games. An animatic pilot of the planned series was later released online in 2022 and then removed.

Kingdom of Hearts merges the worlds of Disney and Final Fantasy. The game follows the journey of a young boy named Sora who, armed with a magical weapon called the Keyblade, travels through various Disney-themed worlds to battle the dark forces known as the Heartless.

Together with his companions Donald and Goofy, emissaries from Disney Castle sent by King Mickey, Sora tries to prevent the Heartless from consuming these worlds by closing the “locks” that keep each world stable.

Fans love the story of the game and it could make a really great movie if the story was handled properly. We’ll just have to wait and see what Disney does.

Would you like to see Disney make a Kingdom of Hearts movie? What would you like to see from it?
