Ben Stiller has recently opened approx Zoolander 2 and how he was taken aback by the fact that it bombed at the box office.
As you might expect, he was confused that the film had flopped at the box office. The sequel was made on a budget of $50 million and ultimately grossed only $29 million domestically.
The first film was quite successful and the audience seemed to like it, so he thought everyone wanted to see a sequel, but the numbers proved otherwise.
Stiller was recently a guest David Duchovnythe podcast of Fail better , and speaking about the film’s failure, he said: “I thought everyone wanted it. And then it’s like, ‘Wow, I must have really messed this up.’ Not everyone went there. And it got these horrible reviews.”
He continued: “It really scared me because I was like, ‘I didn’t know it was this bad?’ What scared me most about this was that I was losing what I think is fun, the questioning of yourself… Zoolander 2, was definitely surprising to me. And it definitely influenced me for a long time.
It probably didn’t help that Zoolander 2 was up against the first Deadpool movie, which was dominating the box office at the time. Obviously everyone was more excited about Deadpool than Zoolander.
Stiller went on to talk about what came out of that experience: “The wonderful thing that came out of it for me was just having space where, if it was a success, and they would say, ‘Make Zoolander 3 now,’ or they offered me some other movie, I probably would have dived in and done it.”
He added: “But I had this space to sit with myself and have to deal with this and other projects I was working on – not comedies, some of them – I have the time to work on them and develop them. “
Stiller continued: “Even if someone said, ‘Well, why don’t you go do another comedy or do this one?’ I probably could have found something to do. But I just didn’t want to.
He said: “I was just hurt. Finding yourself in terms of what you want to be and do creatively, I’ve always loved directing. I have always loved making films. I’ve always, in my mind, loved the idea of just directing films since I was a kid, and not necessarily comedies. And so, over the next nine or ten months, I was able to develop these limited series.”
The series you are referring to are Escape from Dannemora AND Separation.
I thought Zoolander 2 it was perfectly in line with the first film. Not better, not worse, just a silly, wacky comedy. While Stiller was feeling a little down in the dumps, he ended up bouncing back and creating even better and funnier entertainment!
