Hybrid live-action/animation film THE BIG WAR reimagines World War II as represented by animals

Director Mathieu Kassovitz (La Haine) will direct an English-language live-action/animation hybrid film titled The Great Warwhich is inspired by the French graphic novel La Bete Est Morte.

This is the first film Kassovitz has made in 13 years, and while you may not be familiar with his work, you’ll definitely know the writer who penned the screenplay.

The Great War was written by Caroline Thompsonwho previously worked on projects such as The nightmare before Christmas, The Corpse BrideAND Edward scissor hands.

It is a project that the director is passionate about, who declared: “This is a project I have been working on for twenty years. It is inspired by the cult French graphic novel La Bete Est Morte, written during the Second World War.

The director spoke about the story, saying, “Reimagine that war as being carried out by animals. The Nazis are the wolves who chase the “parasites” – the rabbits – who represent the victims of the war.”

He added: “The story focuses on two rabbits who chase their family who have been taken away and during their journey they discover adventures and other rabbits who join their cause.”

Thompson shared: “It’s a heartfelt and lovely story. We’ve been going through this for a while. Mathieu is a wonderful person to work with and this inspired me to write again.”

Kassovitz spoke about the film’s production, saying, “I’m shooting the movie with real locations and scenes and then the animal characters will be put in, so I’ll shoot a movie that will be handed to the animators.”

He continued: “We are now in the design phase, we are looking for financiers and we want to start production by the end of the year. We will have a budget of around $30 million and we are in discussions with American and British actors whose names I can’t reveal yet.

The project is produced by Aton Soumache who previously worked on films such as The little Prince AND Miraculous: Ladybug and Black Cat, the film.
