One of the family hits of last summer was Indiana Jones and the Quadrant of Destiny, a long-awaited and seemingly well-received sequel to the popular Indiana Jones franchise. The film promised one last starring adventure Harrison Ford back in the title role for the last time. The film received a 70% critics score on Rotten Tomatoes and an 88% audience score, but it appears not enough fans flocked through the turnstiles to cover the film’s production costs.
A report from Forbes says data from industry analyst Box Office Mojo proves this Quadrant of Destiny grossed $384 million, just 49% of the grosses of its prequel, Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, which fans were largely unhappy with. It seems that in 2008 there were a lot more people going to the movies.
The report explains it Indiana Jones and the Quadrant of Destiny failed to cover its costs at the box office, and Disney spent $134.2 million more making the film than it is believed to have received from ticket sales, according to financial statements released Friday.
One of the best scenes in the film was the dramatic train chase with a digitally aged Ford. This came at a cost as documents reveal that $79 million was spent on post-production work in the year to early April 2023, bringing the film’s total budget to a whopping $387.2 million of dollars.
It’s sad to see that this entertaining film failed to turn a profit. When things like this happen at the box office, studio executives are sometimes less willing to lend a director a budget. But we want to continue to see great films made! Not everyone has a big budget, sure, but when a successful film is made, I would love to see it made with this level of quality. So let’s get back to the movies and make these films worth the budget!
