It actually seems like it Adam Sandler could actually develop Happy Gilmore 2! Last week, Christopher McDonaldwho played shooter McGavin in the original film, offered an update claiming that a script had been written.
Now Sandler confirms that the sequel is indeed in development for Netflix. During an interview to promote his new film Astronaut on Netflix, the comedian spoke with Dan Patrick on his sports radio show.
They discussed McDonald sharing news about the film’s development, and Sandler joked, “I was like, that’s right, he’s the bad guy!”
Sandler discussed where they’re at with the project and said, “No no, it was nice. Very nice Danny, very nice. And we’re working on it. Me and Tim Herlihy they are diligently trying to create a good reason for everyone to come watch and enjoy. Netflix is thrilled about it. So we’re working on it. We have some good ideas.”
He added, “Well, I’m shooting this movie that I’m in right now, and when I get home, in a little while I’ll call Herlihy and we’ll go in the room and jam and jam and jam. Now, we’ve been playing , we already have a million ideas. We just have to make a movie out of it.”
He continued: “And make sure we’re excited for people to have fun. It’s important, we love Happy Gilmore, we don’t want to disappoint anyone. People have been talking about it for many years. In fact, as I walked the streets of London, they said, “When is Appy coming?” We will work hard and make sure everything goes well.”
Before Sandler confirmed the news, Drew Barrymore appeared to confirm the sequel in a preview clip released from Friday’s episode The Drew Barrymore Show.
When talking about the sequel, Barrymore says in the video: “I want it. I need it. And I stayed up last night with my daughter watching Billy Madison. I sent Sandler a video of this, and then he sent me another video, and I’m waiting to see if he confirms what happened. Happy Gilmore 2 script.”
The video then cuts to later and Barrymore looks at her phone and sees that Sandler had sent her a text. She said: “I just arrived, I have the latest news. I’ll just say this, from my source, which is ongoing.”
Then he reiterates: “There is a process, and that process is ongoing.”
This all started with McDonald, who previously shared, “I saw Adam about two weeks ago, and he said, ‘McDonald, you’re going to love this.’ I said, “What?” He says, “How about that?” [and] shows me the first draft of Happy Gilmore 2.””
He then went on to say that it’s “in the works.” But it’s nice to get confirmation from Sandler on the matter.
In 2021 Sandler and McDonald had given an interview with Golf Channel and when asked about a sequel, Sander said he would be interested in the idea saying, “It hasn’t been discussed. But it certainly has been discussed on the Internet, and I think I , that Senior Tour idea… that would be amazing.”
It would be really cool if one day we saw a Happy Gilmore 2. I mean, the movie doesn’t really need a sequel. But I like that we might be able to see what these characters are doing after all these years.
