Many movie fans are really curious Francis Ford Coppolathe next movie Megalopolis. The film was recently screened for a select group of people and some reactions emerged from that screening.
According to Puck, those who saw the film were mostly confused by it. One viewer said the film is “unshakable as crap” and said it has “zero commercial prospects”.
The film has also been called a mix of “Ayn Rand, Metropolis and Caligula”. The film’s ending is said to be “baffling” and, at one point, an actor in the audience began conversing with the film’s star, Adam Driver, on the screen… wait what!?
Deadline also saw the film and shared, “Coppola’s new film is full of ideas that blend the past with the future, with an epic, highly visual tale that plays perfectly on an IMAX screen. It covers complex themes in a extraordinarily short”. two hours and 13 minutes, excluding credits.”
We knew it would be an unconventional film and it looks like watching it will be quite an interesting cinematic experience!
The film tells the story of an architect who dreams of a utopian version of New York in the near future and his battle with the conservative mayor, who has other ideas about the city. The epic contains a myriad of plots and characters. “The fate of Rome haunts a modern world unable to solve its social problems in this epic story of political ambition.”
Coppola described the film as “a love story. A woman is torn between her loyalty to two men. But not just two men. Every man comes with a philosophical principle. One is her father who raised her, who taught her Latin in her womb and is devoted to a much more classical vision of society, the vision of Marcus Aurelius.
“The other one, who is the lover, is the father’s enemy but is dedicated to a much more progressive vision of ‘Let’s jump into the future, let’s skip all this rubbish that has contaminated humanity for 10,000 years.’ Let’s discover what we really are, which is an enlightened, friendly and joyful species.’”
Coppola had also previously said of the film: “What would make me really happy? It’s not winning a lot of Oscars because I already have a lot of them and maybe more than I deserve. And it’s not that I earn a lot of money, although I think over time it will earn a lot of money because everything that people keep looking at and finding new things, makes money.
“So somewhere, long after I’m gone, all I want is for them to argue [Megalopolis] and is the society we live in the only one available to us? How can we improve it? Education, mental health? What the film really proposes is that utopia is not a place. It’s how can we make everything better? Every year, come up with two, three or four ideas that make it better.”
“I would be smiling in my grave if I thought something like this happened, because people talk about what movies really mean if you give them something. If I encouraged people to talk about marriage, education, health, justice, opportunity, freedom and all of these wonderful things that humans have designed. And ask yourself the question: How can we make it even better? That would be great. Because I bet they would make it better if they had that conversation.”
It also includes the cast of the film Shia LaBeouf, Forest Whitaker, Nathalie Emmanuel, Jon Voight, Aubrey Square, Jason Schwartzmann, Laurence Fishburne, Grace VanderWaal, Kathryn Hunter, Giacomo Remar, Talia County. Dustin Hoffmann, Chloe Fineman (Saturday night live), Isabelle Kusmann (Licorice pizza), D. B. Sweeney (Fire in the sky), Bailey IvesAND Giancarlo Esposito.
Driver had already spoken about the film saying: “The film is crazy. It’s so imaginative and big and epic, and it’s bold. It takes a risk and I couldn’t be more excited about it.
